SCI Greene Reports Inmate Death

Waynesburg – Superintendent Robert Gilmore reports the death of an inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Greene.

Staff was conducting a security round on the housing unit when an officer observed inmate Cleveland Rivers, 59, hanging in his cell at approximately 6:15 a.m. Staff immediately responded and provided life-saving measures until facility medical personnel arrived.

The inmate was pronounced dead by a prison physician.

In accordance with state policy, State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Greene County Coroner’s Office.

Rivers was serving a life sentence for first degree murder out of Allegheny County. He was committed to the PA Department of Corrections on February 24, 1999, and had been at SCI Greene since July 14, 1999.

The inmate’s next-of-kin has been notified.
