Responsible to: On a day-to-day basis the post holder will work with the Senior Sport and Exercise Science Support Officer and Principal Lecturer in the economic engagement Unit. The post holder will be line managed by the Assistant Head of School (Student and Staff Experience)

Main areas of

responsibility:

1 To work with the relevant Economic and Social Engagement (EASE) related academic colleagues and the other sports science support officers to establish sports and exercise science support contracts based upon the needs of potential clients.

2 To design, deliver and evaluate sport and exercise science support services to a range of client groups (e.g. from junior athletes to exercise referral patients).

3 To disseminate applied knowledge and experience throughout the curriculum by working closely with the teaching team. Support teaching under the direction of the module leader. Supervising and advising undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking work based experience modules.

4 Deliver sports and exercise science workshops to a variety of client groups (junior and senior athletes, sports coaches, exercise referral patients etc.) including delivering on our workshop programme for school children.

Specific duties: 1 To work with the relevant EASE related academic colleagues and the other sport and exercise science support officers to establish sports and exercise science support contracts based upon the needs of potential clients.

1.1 Perform needs analysis on potential client groups.

1.2 Identify possible new projects via mail shots and action research to inform possible future investment. This will involve project management and a high level of organisational and administrative skills.

1.3 To be involved in other school and university initiatives as determined by the Assistant Head of School (Business and International) and the Assistant Head of School (Staff and Student Experience).

2. To design, deliver and evaluate sports and exercise science support services to a range of client groups (e.g. from junior athletes to exercise referral patients).

2.1 Design new business opportunities in the field of sport and exercise science in conjunction with the Principal Lecturer Economic Engagement.

2.2 Deliver these services in a professional and timely manner.

2.3 Evaluate the effectiveness of the services (to include the economic perspective and the value added to the School).

2.4 Implement evidence based practice related to performance enhancement. This will involve delivering education based seminars, performing laboratory and field based fitness testing and designing appropriate physical training programmes.

3. To disseminate applied knowledge and experience throughout the curriculum by working closely with the teaching team. Support teaching under the direction of the module leader. Supervising and advising undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking work based experience modules.

3.1 Contribute to the undergraduate (BSc) and post graduate (MSc) teaching programme through supervision of students offered the opportunity to help deliver Sports and Exercise Science Support on a variety of the external contracts.

3.2 Deliver occasional sessions on undergraduate modules under the direction of the module leader on subjects related to their area of expertise.

3.3 Encourage student development via appropriate demonstrations, observations of work and giving appropriate feedback.

4. Deliver sports and exercise science workshops to a variety of client groups (junior and senior athletes, sports coaches, exercise referral patients etc.) including delivering on our workshop programme for school children.

4.1 Deliver workshops on a variety of topics such as the following indicative headings: performance lifestyle, psychological performance preparation, physical preparation, nutritional preparation etc.

4.2 Contribute across the spectrum of workshops and in the areas of personal specialism.

4.3 Deliver practical and theory based sessions to ‘GCSE’ and ‘A’ level PE students as part of an existing programme.

Selection criteria: The criteria below indicate the qualities that are needed to do the job well. Candidates will be selected according to the extent to which they satisfy these criteria. Evidence of potential will also be considered. Most of the criteria must normally be met in order to qualify for selection.

Essential:

Knowledge/qualifications:

• A good degree (1st or 2:1) and MSc in sport, exercise or health science, or a relevant related subject.

• Applied academic knowledge in physiology of sport and exercise and the use of physiological assessment techniques.

• Applied academic knowledge in at least one of the following areas: performance analysis, strength and conditioning, biomechanics

· Experience of applied practical work such as with competitive sportsmen/women, coaches, exercise programme participants, school students etc.

• Up-to-date, sound knowledge of the subject including current professional/vocational developments and the range of generic skills required.

• Evidence of a high level of analytical, communication and problem-solving ability.

• Communication: clear, concise, accurate written and oral communication with particular ability to explain complex processes and procedures; able to write effective, clear and concise reports.

• Service: demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to relevant ‘client’ service standards.

Self motivation: meets objectives on own initiative; committed to continuous self-development. Innovative and demonstrates entrepreneurial skills.

• Teamwork: effective contribution to teamwork, working co-operatively with others, achieving mutual satisfaction.

• Organisation: has developed effective work systems and meets agreed priorities efficiently.

Response to change: keeps abreast of developments and contributes effectively to planning and implementation of change.

Technical skill: experienced in the use of sports and exercise science equipment; understanding of and compliance with health and safety requirements.

• Physical: the postholder must be able to undertake all the physical requirements of the job, such as lifting and moving heavy/bulky items; extensive use of display screen equipment; occasional travel to a variety of external locations.

Desirable:

§ A relevant higher degree.

§ Experience of project management.

§ Experience of the Primary School Sport Premium

· Professional accreditation in a relevant area such as BASES accreditation for support; CSci; UKSCA and other graduate level schemes.

· Evidence of working in the commercial sector and an understanding and appreciation of the customer/client.

· A record of generating income from sport and exercise science activities.

· A record of publication in research and/or applied literature.

· Capillary blood sampling.

· Experience in supervising students.

· Driving Licence
