PROGRAM FACT SHEET

Associate in Applied Science Cosmetology A55140

This curriculum is designed to provide competency based knowledge, scientific/artistic principle and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment, which enables students to develop manipulative skills.

Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge and other selected topics.

Graduates should qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successful passing of the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Employment is available in beauty salons and related businesses. This program leads to a Diploma. To be eligible for graduation, the student must have satisfactorily completed the course requirements.

The college maintains an open-door admission policy to all applicants who are high school graduates or who are at least 18 years of age. A high school student, 16 years old or older, may be admitted to the Cosmetology Program upon approval by the high school principal and the college admission office.

Qualification for licensing cosmetologists: Students must complete 1500 hours in program and complete 1500 hour performance requirements in order to sit for the cosmetology licensure examination: Students must score 75 or higher.

Or

Qualification for licensing apprentices: Student must complete 1200 hours in program and complete 1200 hour performance requirements to sit for the apprentice’s examination. Student must score 70 or higher. Upon passing apprentices examination, student must complete a six month apprenticeship in a NC State Board approved licensed salon. Once apprenticeship is completed student then applies for cosmetologist license.
