Geography:

Serenity Vontroba, Geography teacher, created an entire unit, “The Impact of Human Societies,” connecting National Geography Standards to the footprint model. She focused on the impact of human behavior and possible solutions to show students their choices make an impact.

National Geography Standards: 4,11,12,14,16,18

Student work: students create storyboards illustrating the pattern of human societies from hunter-gatherer to industrialized and beyond.

Student work: Students took the online quiz, defined what an Ecological Footprint is and used the definition to create a visual display of their own individual footprints- highlighting the number of acres they required for food, mobility, shelter and goods and services.

Activity: Students took the EF quiz for themselves, as well as if they were individuals living in other countries. We were able to connect the types of societies with their EF and overall impact on the planet. We also looked at relevant global issues such as population and inequity, and integrated lessons such as "Let Them Eat Cake" into the curriculum.
