ARTISTIC AIM:

Children create a tableau of the story ‘buffalo woman’ by Paul Goble

LITERACY/ MATH/ SUBJECT AREA AIM:

Make personal connections to literature by using experiential exercises like drawing and acting thereby deepening understanding of story

Motivation:

Imagination exercise using the word journey and then drawing their idea of a journey

Also the reading of the book- Buffalo Woman

MATERIALS: blank paper, book, colored pencils

Procedure:

1. call-out- in a clear and powerful voice say your favorite beast or feast

2. hand out paper and pencils

3. centering exercise into imagining the word “journey”

4. drawing the image of a journey

5. put papers aside and do i say-you say it vowel play

6. do tongue twister- big blue buffalo bellows

7. read the story out loud- Buffalo Woman – and ask children to pay attention to important images, moments and feelings in the story and in their imaginaton

8. children pick one moment in the story to draw

9. talk about/identify the characters in the story- man, buffalo woman, villagers, son, buffalo chief

10. do embodying/feeling/freezing exercises with each one:

· beautiful woman drinking water

· man hunting/falling in love

· villagers gossipPing

· worried boy

· stern proud buffalo chief

11. go back to the pictures they drew about the storyand ask them to embody/freeze that moment of the story

12. create a group tableau using those moments, if possible do two groups so children can see as audience and also perform

13. close- make a big circle and ask children how they felt about the experience

14. each child chooses one word related to class or how they feel around the circle

15. close with a pulse (the pulse takes several journeys around the circle)
