Greenhouse Tech

The Greenhouse Tech position is a summer opportunity for 16 to 22-year old youthInterested in learning hands on greenhouse operations from: safety, materials handling, plant growth and physiology, and all aspects of greenhouse production from germination to harvest. You’ll work at the Groundwork Greens greenhouse at 5270 N Federal. A Greenhouse Tech works part-time during the summer.

The objectives of this project are 1) to improve your understanding of greenhouse operation and provide you technical training and mentorship in the industry2) this project will also be a summer opportunity in a rising industry locally and globally!

Eligibility

  • 16-22 year oldswho have reliable tarnsporation to the Groundwork Greens greenhouse
  • located : 5270 N Federal Denver, CO 80221
  • Interest in food systems, food production,plants/gardening, chemistry, biology, hydroponics, and greenhouse operations
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry and biology
  • Students interested in food production, community and environmental stewardship
  • Youthcommitted to teamwork, safety, follow-through, education, and hard work
  • Students able to work in ahot and humid environment for up to 6 hours
  • Handle tools, hazardous materials, climb ladders safelty, and lift up to 25lbs
  • Students able to work with precision and attention to detail

Summer Work Schedule

  • June 12th to August11th, 2017
  • M, T, W, and Th (Potential for some Saturdays)
  • 8 AM to 1 PM each day
  • Meet at the Groundwork Greens greenhouse

Wage

  • $9.30 – $11.00/hour, up to 160 hours

Expectations

  • Work on Greenhouse projects 20 hours a week.
  • Work hard, take direction and complete projects as assigned.
  • Strictly observe ALL SAFETY PROTOCOLS.
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude by being on time, taking responsibility for safety and verbalizing ideas and concerns to Greenhouse Manager.
  • Demonstrate capacity to learn production tasks, and perform those tasks in an independent manner.
  • Be a leader among peers by setting an example to other team members at all times; wear apropriate work clothes: Closed toe shoes, long pants, long sleeve shirt (can be left at the green house.)
  • Funders, elected officials, volunteers, and others come for tours at the green house during those times: Serve as ambassadors to the community by communicating the importance of the work done at Groundwork Greens, and how that work ties into issues relating to the environment and social justice.
  • Travel with the Greenhouse Manager to restaurants for sales and farmers markets to set up stands and feel comfortable communicating with the public about your work.

Work Policies

Paid and non-paid days: Any time you work or travel to a work site you will be paid. Recreation in the afternoons or the second day of recreation on a weekend job will not be paid.

Substance Free: In accordance with Groundwork Denver’s drug-free workplace policy, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs are prohibited while participating in all work related activities.
