PROGRAMS/PRESENTATIONS

School psychologist Michelle Edick reported on Alfred University’s family therapy project, based at Arcade Elementary School. Started last year, the program is the product of an initiative to provide rural areas with quality mental health services. Alfred, in partnership with Pioneer, began offering counseling and consultation services one afternoon and evening per week. Three graduate students were supervised on site by Ms. Edick and Alfred faculty. Six families were served between January and June 2005, including students at all levels, and several more were placed on a waiting list. Some of the issues addressed in the sessions included student behavior at home and school, student depression, parent/child interaction, and parenting skills. Services were provided free of charge. The program will continue this year, with efforts focused on better efficiency and greater publicity for the program.

Director of Curriculum Pamela Kattermann joined building administrators in presenting information on the most summer school session. Objectives for this year’s program included a consistent curriculum for grades K-8 and training for participating staff. Math and language arts learning kits were also introduced.

Attendance at the elementary level averaged between 40 and 50 students per day, with assessments indicating that students maintained academic skills, and in many cases improved them.

At the middle school, 38 students were required to attend summer school, and 34 participated for an attendance rate of 90 percent. Eight other students were referred to the program by their parents. All of the students who were enrolled successfully completed their requirements, and there were no discipline or behavior referrals. Also, an incentive program at the middle school, based on participation and attendance, was also successful.

Teachers participating in the high school’s summer program completed an individual learning plan for all eligible students, who could raise up to two quarter grades for the core subject areas as well as physical education and health. Instruction was offered for Regents exam review and driver education. In all, 125 students were enrolled in the summer intervention programs, 20 in the driver education, and the attendance rate was 96 percent. There were no discipline/behavior referrals, and 89 students earned course credit. Five seniors earned course credit and graduated, and 19 of the driver education students passed.

DISCUSSION/WORK SESSION

Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Bowen reported that the school district is negotiating with Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES for a significant increase in the rate Pioneer charges BOCES for use of its classrooms and facilities. The rates have not changed for over 20 years.

Dr. Bowen also said the AOK Project had received $5,000 from Pioneer Credit Recovery, which is $4,000 more than the program had been seeking.

He said that new staff had participated in a week of orientation activities, and that a full day of professional development was planned for all staff on Sept. 1.
