Presenters: Trevor Fockler, Janice Lee, Beverly Raynor, Ajoke Adigun
Target Concept
Mixtures > Heterogeneous and Homogenous
Objective: The students will engage in a discussion, hands on activity, and work collaboratively, in order to identify and distinguish between a homogenous and heterogeneous mixture and be able to give an example of each.
Prior knowledge students are expected to know: The definition of mixture
Vocabulary Words: Heterogeneous, Homogeneous
Engagement: The instructor will give the definition of the end part of the words “heterogeneous” and “homogeneous”. Geneous = producing, yielding. Next, the instructor will give an example of each type of prefix, without giving the definition of the entire word. Then the instructor will have the students create their own definitions based on the examples. The instructor will hear some responses.
Explanation: The instructor will review the vocabulary words for today’s lesson. Next, the instructor will complete a table (similar to the one the students will later complete on their own) of both heterogeneous and homogeneous examples (a. Raisin Bran b. Juice c. Air d. Chunky Soup e. Hamburger f. Mineral Rock g. Paint h. Cake Batter i. salad). The instructor will select students to assist in identifying each type of example and discuss and questions which may arise.
Exploration: Instructor will explain rules of the activity and have students go up one group at a time to make their observations. Students will fill out a chart where they are required to identify a homogenous and heterogeneous mixture, given labeled samples.
Extension: Students will be charged with the responsibility of creating either a homogeneous or heterogeneous picture using geometric figures. Then each student’s work will be photographed and then posted to a website. Then each student has to log on to the web site and comment on what type of picture a fellow classmate created. They will have to label and then give an explanation of why they labeled the picture either heterogeneous or homogeneous. Later on as a class the students can see the finished product including the various posting and discuss the accuracy of the labeling and comments posted by students.
Evaluation: As apart of their regular Science Journal entries, the students will give their own definitions of what a homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture is. Students will also give a real world example of each type of mixture.
