BODY OF KNOWLEDGE: L. Life Science
TOPIC XVI: Pathogens Comparison
ESSENTIAL CONTENT / OBJECTIVES / INSTRUCTIONAL TOOLS /A. Infectious agents
1. Viruses
a. Requires a host
2. Bacteria
3. Fungi
4. Parasites
B. Disease Prevention
C. Sexually transmitted infections (STI)
D. HIV/AIDS / · Identify, compare and contrast the types of infectious agents that affect the human body
· Compare and contrast the ways bacteria and viruses affect different organisms.
· Compare different types of infectious agents and how they infect the human body
· Recognize that bacteria and viruses can infect the human body through many different modes of transmission including airborne, blood borne, body fluids, etc.
· List the many ways a person may become infected with disease (i.e., HIV, STI’s, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis, etc.)
· Identify ways to prevent infection from bacteria and viruses including universal precautions and barrier protection in sexual relationships
· Investigate the different variables that increase the chance of disease transmission
· List common health issues related to adolescence (communicable diseases, eating disorders, decision making, hereditary factors)
· Discuss prevention of risky behaviors related to adolescence (refusal skills, negotiation skills, conflict resolution).
· Explain how body systems are impacted by hereditary factors and infectious agents / Core Text Book: Pearson Interactive Science Florida Ch. 14;
