Medical Imaging Exchange

The Medical Imaging Exchange (MiX), previously known as ‘the Hub and Spoke’ is for RCH doctors who:

1. require access to urgent images from one of the following participating Victorian Hospitals or

2. need to send urgent images to one of the following participating Victorian Hospitals

Participating Hospitals

The Alfred Hospital / Peninsula Health
The Austin Hospital / Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
Ballarat Base Hospital / The Royal Children’s Hospital
Barwon Health / The Royal Melbourne Hospital
Bendigo Health / Southern Health
Central Melbourne Medical Imaging / St Vincent’s Health
Eastern Health / Western Health

What is the MiX (?

The RCH Medical Imaging Exchange (MiX) is a system where images can be sent from, or received by, the RCH PACS system (Synapse) in the event that images are urgently required from another centre.

For example, a child is flown to the RCH ICU, but a CT scan performed at the Emergency Department at Bendigo Health has not arrived with the patient. That CT scan could be requested from Bendigo Health and it will be sent to the RCH PACS system (Synapse).

How to REQUEST images from another participating hospital

1. Complete the Request / Notification Form below to request the images you need from the external health centre.

2. Ask the MID clerical staff (in hours), or the duty radiographer (after hours), to fax the form to the relevant centre.

3. When the images arrive, search the PACS (Synapse) using the patient’s name.

4. The images will be matched up with the RCH UR number by the MID clerical staff in business hours.
