Week 8, YLC

Essential Questions:

- How can the maker of a photo create illusions?

- How can you replicate the effect of a double exposure in Ps?

Learning Objectives (SWBAT):

- Discuss and compare examples of a photographer who employs a similar technique in different works

- Understand the concept of double exposure and find examples online

- Follow step by step instructions in Ps to create an original image Eric Johansson

- Experiment and discover the effects of tools in the program

- Properly save work in the correct file type and location

Leads and Teen Involvement: Leads and Teens can keep students focused and model good group discussion, and help them practice using the photo-editing tools if they are comfortable with this.

Materials:

- Tech Lab computers

Vocabulary: double exposure, composite image, contrast, value, saturation

Class Format:

10 min Intro Discussion/Recap: Students will enter and go directly to computers, where they will log on to my tumblr class site (listed above). We will spend a few minutes looking at composite photographs made by photographer Eric Johansson, and after students have had time to look over all the examples, we will discuss the key questions:

How were these made?

What affects or impressions does this technique create for you?

30 min Main Activity: I will introduce the idea of a double-exposed image, which is similar to a composite image in that it combines images from two different sources into one. I will instruct students to go to the Class Projects link, and follow the step there for working in Photoshop and finding images online to use.

The rest of the work time students will create their own double exposed image, focusing on Importing images into the program, using the Select Tools, Layers, and adjusting Layer Opacity to create the transparent double image effect. In addition I will encourage students to also apply the lighting and color effects we learned last class.

5 Share: At the end of class students will have a chance to stand up and walk around the room to look at others’ work. I will ask students to share difficulties, solutions and discoveries made while working.

Clean-up: No Clean-up necessary!
