COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

· SURG7010: Surgery - Major course in Surgical Problems (6 credits) This course constitutes the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds. The topics of this one-hour, once-weekly conference reflect the diverse spectrum of the discipline of surgery. Satisfactory completion of this course is based on documented attendance.

· SURG7020: Surgery (6 credits) This course constitutes the Surgical Subspecialty Rounds in each of the disciplines of the department. The topics of this one-hour, once-weekly conference generally cover the entire domain of the specialty during the course of the year. Satisfactory completion of this course is based on documented attendance.

· SURG7030: Advanced Surgery (3 credits) This course constitutes an additional surgical subspecialty sessions separate and distinct from the above. Its contents are specific to each subspecialty discipline. Satisfactory completion of this course is based on documented attendance.

· SURG7040: Surgical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (3 credits) Prepare students to design studies suitable for a wide variety of research questions including diagnostic, etiologic and prognostic, and treatment outcomes, with focus on surgical issues. It should also provide the students with the essential biostatistical and epidemiologic tools to critique medical literature. The evaluation will be based on submission of a complete proposal to answer a research question of each student’s choice.

It is highly suggested that Biostatistics 1 & 2 be taken by all students registered in the Masters Program. If the Surgical Epidemiology and Biostatistics course listed above is not available the equivalent would be 093.747 Biostatistics I. Students should also consider taking Biostatistics II.

· SURG7470: Biostatistics 1 (3 credits) An introduction to statistical ideas and techniques for health sciences research. The description of data. Patterns in data, the normal, binomial and Poisson distributions. Principles of estimation. Principles of hypothesis testing. The major statistical tests (t tests, analysis of variance, chi squared tests, correlation and regression).

· 093.7480: Biostatistics 2 (3 credits) Techniques of research design and analysis for health scientists. Principles of experimental design. Clinical trial planning. Study size determinations. Analysis of variance for factorial and split plot experiments. Analysis of covariance. Multiple regression. Non-parametric hypothesis testing. Principles of survey design. Prerequisite: 093.747 and permission of instructor.
