Malaia: A Case Study of CRRT management in New Zealand.

Starship Children’s Hospital was opened in December 1991 to provide a strong national centre of paediatric excellence to the 3.5 million population of New Zealand. Central to this was the development of a dedicated paediatric intensive care unit which acts as a tertiary referral centre for the critically ill children of New Zealand.
This presentation describes a continuum of care for a child that received CRRT for acute renal failure following referral to PICU for Milary TB.
Included in this presentation will be a discussion on access difficulties, replacement fluid management and the management of citrate anticoagulation. Citrate, as an anticoagulant therapy, was new to PICU.
Education paid a critical role in managing this new therapy successfully and resulted in a long, effective filter life, despite low blood flows. This was seen as a triumph of education in improving patient outcomes.
