Background

Prospect Hospice provides a broad range of End of Life Care services across Swindon and North East Wiltshire. Our care is delivered in our 16 bed In-Patient Unit, Day Therapy Unit, Outreach Centre, Great Western Hospital and patients’ homes. The Hospice has an outstanding local reputation and is committed to ensuring that the patients and families we provide comfort and care for each year continue to receive an exceptional level of support towards the end of their lives, as well as helping to influence and enhance best practice in End of Life Care with other providers.

  1. Main purpose & scope

Working closely with the Lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine, the In-Patient Nurse Manager - Clinical Leadis responsible formanaging and coordinating the provision of nursing care on the In-Patient Unit, and providing leadership and management of nursing team staff. Leadership will be consistent at all times with Prospect Hospice’s values, philosophy and strategy, and will ensure that nursing care is delivered by an efficient and effective workforce.

The post holder will actively contribute to the Patient Services clinical governance framework through participation in education and training, and research and audit initiatives.

The prime purpose of the role is to ensure excellence in nursing care over a twenty four hour period, providing nursing advice and support and promoting high standards of professionalism and compassionate care.

A key element will be to ensure day to day management of nursing staff, to ensure a nurse led model of care. This will be achieved through effective workforce planning and development which the post holder will oversee. The post holder is also responsible for ensuring that the day to day contribution of volunteers to patient care needs is well managed and supported by the nursing team.

  1. Key accountabilities and areas of responsibility

Responsibilities will include but will not be restricted to:

Management

  • To promote the safety, well-being and interests of patients, staff, volunteers and visitors to the In-patient Unit
  • To act as a management lead for the in-patient nursing team, promoting and maintaining positive professional attitudes and motivation
  • To ensure that contractual reporting requirements are followed in accordance with national and local guidelines
  • To ensure that legal requirements relating to assessment of mental capacity, consent, and Deprivations of Liberty authorisation requests are followed and reported internally
  • To promote a challenging but supportive environment for professional nursing practice
  • To work closely with the Head of Patient Services and team leaders to identify areas for improvement in service delivery
  • To support the development and implementation of identified service improvements
  • To attend Patient Services Committee and other trustee led meetings as requested
  • To ensure high clinical and environmental standards are maintained at all times
  • To identify performance, conduct and attitude improvement issues among staff and ensure supportive training and other improvement programmes are implemented, monitored, reviewed and reported
  • To manage any grievance or disciplinary procedures which arise, in line with policy and human resources advice
  • To investigate complaints as requested by the Director of Patient Services
  • To oversee the requisition of supplies, repairs and replacement of equipment within agreed budgets
  • To participate in the recruitment, selection and induction of inpatient nursing staff
  • To monitor the quality and content of patient records and documentation systems
  • To monitor and continuously improve medicines management
  • To take an intelligent and innovative approach to the use of all resources, especially staff and skill mix

  • To promote the work of the hospice through attendance at conferences and the publishing of original work

Person Specification

  1. Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Registered General Nurse with valid NMC registration
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent level of expertise gained through personal development and experience
  • Knowledge of and qualification in palliative care
  • Knowledge of end of life care policy
  • Diploma in management or willingness to work towards
  • Knowledge of management of change, in particular bringing about and sustaining cultural change
  • Knowledge of the principles of effective financial and resource management
  • Knowledge and experience of multi-disciplinary team working
  • Good knowledge of the importance of management information systems to effective management practice and communications

Experience

  • Significant experience in a senior clinical position within palliative care or a related specialty, including managing a service
  • Experience of successful change management
  • Experience of audit within health or palliative care
  • Experience of budget management

  • Highly developed organisational skills including planning service delivery
  • Creative and evaluative thinking skills and evidence of application of these skills to decision-making
