Stop Motion

Digital Photo 3

You will create your own short film using stop motion techniques. Consider writing your narrative using one of the following themes/concepts: tension or transformation or surrealism.

Requirements:

· Make a storyboard to sketch out your idea.

· Create/make 2-d props/characters/puppets and/or 3-d props/characters/puppets. You may also use some found objects, but you must create some of the elements for your story. You can use construction paper, cardboard, fabric, wood, modeling clay, tooth picks, etc. You could photograph the actual puppets or the shadows of the puppets. Look at origami and Chinese paper cuttings.

· Create a backdrop or diorama type stage for your narrative. You may want more than one scene/environment.

· Include a title with your name at the start of movie and credits at the end of movie.

· Set your camera’s image size to small JPEG.

· Your film must be at least 1 minute long. You will have about 6 frames per second (fps), so you will need to shoot 400- 500 photos. (Most computer animation is between 10-20 frames per second. Animation shot on film and projected is usually 24 frames per second.)

· Consider your compositions and lighting in the creation of your piece. How will the framing and light add to the mood?

· Consider when you may jump from one shot to another (long shot vs. medium vs. close-up).

· Music/sound is optional, but recommended.
