Your Service Cooperative is offering an exciting opportunity for your districts to use the Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) to inform instruction in their classrooms.

The SEC process helps to quickly identify gaps in curriculum and instruction and engages teachers in objective dialogue about what and how they teach. The SEC is a research-based, online tool with which teachers and administrators identify and visually display the content taught, the cognitive demand, and the instructional approaches used in classrooms and across grade levels. The SEC also collects data about teacher and school characteristics and professional development experiences. Developed by Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER), and Learning Point Associates (LPA), the survey can provide comparative data in four aspects of curriculum for use in K-12 subject areas and at the grade level, school, and district levels: intended curriculum, enacted curriculum, learned curriculum, and assessed curriculum. Surveys are available in English/Language Arts/Reading (ELAR), Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science.

A facilitator will be your liaison with WCER to help you start an online SEC project. Then, following a 60 to 90 minute survey, educators will have online access to in-depth, customizable reports that provide a snapshot of what is happening in their classroom and school, leading to conversations about student learning and school improvement.

What can we do with the resulting data?

Information collected is non-evaluative and is analyzed to:

· Refine curriculum to align it with state standards.

· Evaluate the articulation of curricula across grades.

· Identify areas of need for professional development.

· Reflect the cognitive levels of current instruction.

· Evaluate coverage of standards in materials.

· Refine or evaluate local assessments.

· Monitor changes in instructional practice and the effects.

· Encourage collaboration among all teachers and leaders.

· Engage teachers in dialogue about what and how they teach.

Following survey completion, educators access a series of data
charts and graphs that synthesize survey data. The data reports are
designed to be user-friendly and functional for educators. Additional reports can be generated online at any time.

What support is available to my district if we choose to participate?

The most valuable part of the SEC process is the objective discussion about the results and how to apply them to school improvement planning. Trained facilitators are available statewide to provide staff orientations to help teachers prepare to take the survey and to provide follow-up consultation about analyzing the results and using the data for continuous improvement. Please note that because this is a non-evaluative survey, administrators will only be able to view grade level district if three or more teachers take the test. However, teachers can see their own data and may choose to share it. If a school has less than three teachers in a grade, you can view clustered data, such as all first and second grade combined. The cost is $12.50 per survey, plus the cost of facilitation and is available to every school in Minnesota.
