Course Goals: Welcome to Math 1010, a mathematics course designed specifically for liberal arts students. The course has two major goals:

·  To strengthen your quantitative skills and restore your confidence in these skills.

·  To demonstrate the relevance and applicability of mathematics to your lives and careers.

Hopefully, the course will give you an awareness of the role that mathematics plays in today's society. This course is not a course intended to prepare you for future math courses.

Prerequisites: The mathematical prerequisite for the course is that you have met the entrance requirements for the university, namely three years of high school mathematics sometime in your past.

Material needed: A calculator that does basic arithmetic including exponents and probability keys that you must bring to class everyday.

I recommend the TI-30XIIS or a graphing calculator TI-83 or TI-84.

Incompletes: The incomplete policy of the department and college is strictly enforced. Incomplete are only given in situations in which a student has been in good standing all semester, is prevented from completing a course assignment (for example the final exam) by circumstances beyond his control (for example hospitalization, death of a family member).

Cheating: Cheating of any kind may result in a course grade of F and possible expulsion from the University. So please do not cheat!

Ø  Exams and quizzes are to be done individually. You must neither give nor receive help on exams or quizzes.

Homework Guidelines

Mathematics is not a spectator sport. You must engage with the material to learn. Rule of thumb: plan to spend two to three hours out of class (reviewing your lecture notes, reading the text, and working problems) for every hour spent in class. It is important that you seek help from your instructor or your colleagues if you get stuck. I encourage you to form study groups. If you have homework questions that are not answered in class, it is your responsibility to get help outside of class from me or one of your colleagues.

Homework and Projects:

Homework problems will be assigned on MyMathLab each week. These will be worth 20 points each. All homework assignments should be completed by the given deadlines.

There will be a project which will be explained later. Details will be given after chapter 3.

Attendance will be taken daily. You are expected to attend class faithfully and to take responsibility for your own learning.
