TAKS Obj.

Objective #1: Scientific processes. The student, for at least 40% of instructional time, conducts field and laboratory investigations using safe, environmentally appropriate, ethical practices. The student is expected to:

(A). Demonstrate safe practices during field and laboratory investigations; and

(B) Make wise choices in the use and conservation of resources and the disposal or recycling of materials

Lesson Objectives:

To familiarize students with:

·  class rules, expectations, & procedures

·  safety equipment in the lab

Standards & Expectations:

Students will familiarize themselves with what is expected of them in terms of conduct in lecture and lab and will learn the location of all safety equipment

Anticipatory sets:

“Spot it”- I Spy type game: students must count water and exit sources for classroom.

Teaching/Instructional Process:

Using a power point, explain to the students what is expected of them in terms of conduct in the lab.

Latin Learning games will be introduced and played by the students

Supply list will be given

Practice/Monitoring

Play the Latin learning game.

Students will fill in the information and discipline sheets

Closure:

Ask students what they hope to accomplish this next year. Ask them to make three simple rules that they think will help to have a good, academically profitable year.

Independent Practice:

1.  Get forms signed- due Friday

2.  Begin reading Chapter 1 in textbook

Tuesday, 8/25

To help students learn safety rules in the lab.

Standards & Expectations:

Students will become familiar with all the safety rules and the symbols for the safety hazards in the lab.

Anticipatory sets:

“Spot it”- I Spy type game: students must identify 3 things that are wrong with the room in terms of safety.

Teaching/Instructional Process:

  1. Students will watch a video on lab safety while filling out a safety video worksheet
  2. Change- handout Lang , of Science sheets and have them start work on them

3.  Students will view a short animation, “Lab Safety Lawbreaker”(wait)

Practice/Monitoring

Students are filling out the worksheet while I am monitoring them.

Latin learning games

Student will put the website Goanimate! On their favorites list and begin using it

Closure:

Remind students that safety is a full time job in the lab. Illustrate with “gory stories” from my time in lab (i.e. lab accidents I have witnessed or participated in and why I didn’t enjoy them!)

Independent Practice:

Test on Latin words Friday

Students may begin work on their own safety videos. Due on Friday

Wednesday, 8/26

To enroll students in my blackboard class

To download their textbooks

To have them reinforce their knowledge of lab safety by:

·  Doing the internet activity

·  Making their safety animation

Standards & Expectations:

Students will follow instructions and enroll in blackboard course and download books

Students will work independently on the internet activity

Anticipatory sets:

Have them listen to the “safety rap” as they answer three questions on lab safety.

Teaching/Instructional Process:

  1. Students will do safety internet activity while I walk around monitoring. As some of them work on the activity, I will help others to download the textbook on to their laptops until all have the book.
  2. I will show them how to use the goanimate site to make their animations

Practice/Monitoring

Internet Safety activity

Making safety animation

Closure:

Play “worst case scenario”- a game where one student starts a story and another adds on to it- each successive student adds another disaster, describing the mistake the hapless lab student made in the process.

Independent Practice:

Finishing safety animations

Getting contracts for safety and rules signed

Thursday, 8/27

To begin learning the language of science

Standards & Expectations:

Students will acquire a working knowledge of Latin prefixes and suffixes and use them to decipher science terms

Anticipatory sets:

Can you define it? (a few commonly used terms in biology that they may not know)

Teaching/Instructional Process:

Use a power point to introduce the language of science. Let students guess to see if they know the words

Let students use Latin Learning games in small groups to practice with the words

Practice/Monitoring

Hand out language of science sheets and have them decipher the words

Closure:

Ask the students if they can decipher what you are reading to them- use a passage from newspaper of lmagazine article that has some latin terms in it.

Independent Practice:

Students must practice with the terms at home. Quiz on the terms Monday

Lesson Objectives:

To build an interactive notebook

To identify commonly used lab equipment

Standards & Expectations:

Students will set up their interactive notebooks

Anticipatory sets:

“Translate this sentence”

Teaching/Instructional Process:

Use a power point or demo to help them build an interactive notebook

Practice/Monitoring

1.  Language of science & Safety rule quiz

2.  While they work on their books, peers can present their animations on safety

3.  Turn in forms
