Language Arts Project-Menu for: September

(September 2 – September 26, 2014)

Due date: Monday, September 29, 2014

Choose one project to complete by Sept 12, 2014. You will then, choose your second project to do and turn in by Sept. 26. Include the title and author(s) of the reading materials you used as inspiration for your project. Do not turn in your project ahead of time. You will be given 3 to 5 min. to present your project to the class. You will notice that your Language Arts homework will be less during this period in order for you to focus dedicate time to your project. . Don’t hesitate to ask me if you have any questions about your first project! Have fun and I can’t wait to see all your finished products.

Volcanoes: Read the Magic School Bus book, Inside The Earth. Or the Volcanoes Book (from A to Z) that Maestra Ghahramani has. Write a report about the inside of planet earth. You may add pictures of models to go along with your report. / Earthquakes: Research the Great Quake in that took place in Santa Cruz Mountains in 1986. Write a research report about the event. Share your findings in a power point presentation. / Wild Weather: Research how severe storms have affected the U.S.A. over the last 10 years. Write a research report about what you learn. Be prepared to share out in a power point presentation.
Create a mobile for the three branches of the government. Include the responsibilities of each branch. Be prepared to share out to the class. / Design a questionnaire that asks others about the government and how it helps us. Ask at least 20 questions. Then ask at least four people to fill out your questionnaire. / Imagine that you are running for a local public office. Which office would you choose? Create a campaign poster to help you get that position. Include the qualities you possess that make you a good candidate for the position.
Research a famous natural disaster that took place in the past century. Can be an earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, thunderstorm or tornado. Create a PPT Presentation of it. Make sure you give the important facts about the natural disaster and provide photos to go along with your research. / Pretend that you are a weather forecaster for a day. Video tape yourself giving a weather report on the 6’o clock news, where you are reporting a severe storm that is approaching San Jose, CA. What information would you give the public? How should the public do to protect themselves? What damage do you predict? What will you report about the storm? What type of storm is coming? Be prepared to show your video in class or act out your forecast. Props a must! / Read about ONE of the following volcano myths: Devil’s Tower, Wyoming, New Zealand, Mt. Shasta, California, Hawaiian Goddess: Pele, or The Princess and the Warrior: Mexico City. Create a poster or PPT about your interpretation of the myth. (Maestra Ghahramani has the storie, please see her if you are choosing this option as a project. She will give you the text about the myth you choose.
Create a model of a volcano label it and write 5 paragraphs about volcanoes. How they work, the different types of volcanoes, famous volcanoes and any other pertinent information that you feel goes with the topic of volcanoes. Be creative! / Write your own myth about a famous volcano. Use your imagination. Your myth needs to be well written and about a page’s length. / Create an earthquake simulator using any materials of your choice. Write about your experience creating it and how it works. Be prepared to demonstrate your earthquake simulator.
