Come and take the Math Masters Challenge Selection test. It is not too late to get involved. ANY 6th grade student can take the selection test even if he/she has not participated in the practices. After the students have taken the selection test we will choose teams and those teams will continue to practice for the competition in March. The Selection test will be Wednesday, December 16 during second hour in room 327.

Participate in the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry Contest sponsored by the Diversity Council. The theme for this year is “Enemies Transformed.: Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” Please use this quote to inspire your poetry. Poems are due to Mrs. Martenson by December 16 if you want her to submit your poem. Submission information is available in the Gifted Services rack in the Media Center.

Spelling Bee: All 6th grade Language Arts classes and 7th and 8th grade English classes will be holding Classroom Spelling Tests in December. The top two spellers in each class will then move on to the grade level spelling bees. The Kellogg Grade level Spelling Bees will be held on January 6th, 11th, and 13th. Three students from each grade will move on to the School Wide Bee which will be held on January 26th. The winner of the school wide bee will participate in the Regional Spelling Bee held at the Southeast Services Cooperative. The winner of the Regional Bee gets an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Good luck Spellers!

The Northwestern University Midwest Academic Talent Search is sponsored by the Center for Talent Development, based at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The NUMATS gives high performing students (score 90% or higher on either the Reading or Math portion of the MCA’s) the opportunity to take an off level standardized test. Sixth grade students are invited to take the Explore test which is normally given to 8th grade students. Seventh and eighth grade students are invited to take the ACT or SAT, internationally recognized assessment tools used for college admission, as a practice test in order to gain some insight into their strengths. Participants will receive information on high school educational programs for gifted students at Northwestern University as well as colleges and universities across the U.S., and in tenth grade, students receive The College Guide magazine. The preferred test taking dates to be considered for the awards ceremony and registration deadlines are listed below. See the District Gifted Services website for additional dates and locations.
