Secondary (Manufacturing) Field Study (Teen Shopping in November-Black Friday)

Let’s go to the Mall, the Avenue or to a retail establishment like Kohl’s, Target or Wal-Mart and do some geographic retail analysis! Maybe even on Black Friday if you like.

Your Mission….

Go to TWO different clothing/shoe stores where you, as a teenager would shop, and do the following:

1. Find out where in the world a majority of the articles of clothing were manufactured?

2. Do you notice any patterns related to where the clothes/shoes come from and the level of development of these countries? Go to the United Nations Human Development Index web site for detailed country information:

http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/

You must use HDI references in your analysis

3. Do you notice any difference between the place of manufacture between men’s and women’s clothes/shoes? Explain

4. How do your findings relate to the pros and cons of globalization that we have been discussing in class? Think politically, economically and culturally.

5. How do your findings relate to the underlying precepts of the Core/Periphery – World Systems – Wallerstein Model we have been discussing all year long in class?

6. Finally: Create ONE choropleth MAP (use color in your map) of the data from the stores you analyzed that shows the world and then specifically the countries that each store has goods manufactured in. Make sure you create some type of legend for your map!

You can set up a chart/outline for your responses in any format you like. For example, if you want to set up an excel spreadsheet for some of your responses that would be fine. Likewise, if you want, you can create computer generated maps. That would be fine as well.
