Circulating Books
To find circulating books on wide-ranging topics using your key words or ideas:
ü Go to the Kean University Library Homepage, http://library.kean.edu.
ü Click Books, E-books, Videos & More to access the Kean Catalog.
ü Scroll and enter your key words in the search box underneath Find This:
ü Click Search.
ü Scroll down to view the Search Results list. Circulating titles are located in the Main Collection on the second and third floors of the Kean University Library.
ü Make note of the call number and status for any titles of interest.

Electronic Databases
To start using the library’s electronic databases to search for articles on certain topics using your key words, go to the Kean University Library Homepage, http://library.kean.edu. Click Articles & More to access the Databases. The databases are organized in two different lists. In one list the databases are listed alphabetically, and in the other list the databases are listed by subject or format. Brief directions are provided on the next pages to help you navigate these electronic databases. [Note: When you are off-campus, you will be asked to enter your Kean Library Barcode after you click on a database name. Your Kean Library Barcode is located on the back of your Kean University photo ID card.]
MLA International To search Modern Language Association (MLA) International Bibliography, a Bibliography comprehensive resource that indexes literary articles, book chapters, and critical analyses:
ü Click the letter M on the Jump to menu.
ü Click MLA International Bibliography (EBSCOhost).
ü Click Advanced Search.
ü Type your key terms in the search boxes labeled Find:
ü Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, try typing the following terms in the search boxes,
First Search Box: Seamus Heaney
Second Search Box: Sweeney Astray
Third Search Box: mad* or insan* or mental* ill*
ü Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Peer Reviewed under the Limit your results heading.
ü Click Search.
ü Result: The first 10 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see one or more of the following links immediately below the item: HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, or Linked Full Text. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.
ü E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail located at the top of your screen.
ü If full-text link options are not present and you are on-campus, click the TOUR button to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases. If off-campus, search for the journal in the Periodicals list.
Literature Resource To search Literature Resource Center for biographies, bibliographies, and/or critical
Center analyses:
ü Click the letter L on the Jump to menu.
ü Click Literature Resource Center (Thomson GALE).
ü Click Advanced.
ü Locate the heading: Enter search term(s) and select index type. Located immediately below is the first search box. For example, in this first search box, type the author name: Doty Mark
ü In the second box, type the play name: Turtle, Swan
In the corresponding right-hand search box, select Title-exact match instead of Author-name contains.
ü Click Search.
ü Result: Results are displayed for Biographies.
ü Click the article title links to view the full-text biographical articles.
ü Alternatively, click the active Literary Criticism, Articles, & Work Overviews tab.
ü Click the article title links to view the full-text articles.
ü E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail located in the upper left-hand corner of your screen.
Literature Online To search Literature Online for literary works, biographies, and/or critical analyses:
ü Click the letter L on the Jump to menu.
ü Click Literature Online (ProQuest).
ü Click CRITICISM & REFERENCE located on the left-hand side of your screen.
ü Type your key terms in the search box labeled Keyword(s):
ü Use the “AND” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. For example, in the search box labeled Keyword(s), type: feminis* AND Anniad
ü In the search box labeled Author(s)/Subject(s), type: Brooks, Gwendolyn
ü Click Search.
ü Result: citations will be displayed.
ü Click the page icon to view the corresponding HTML full-text, the camera icon to view the corresponding PDF full-text format, and/or the JSTOR icon to access the full-text directly from the JSTOR database.
ü E-mail the HTML full-text version of the article by clicking Email Full Text on the top right-hand side of your screen.
JSTOR To search JSTOR for literary articles:
ü Click the letter J on the Jump to menu.
ü Click JSTOR.
ü Click Search.
ü Type your key terms in the search box.
ü Use the “AND” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, try typing the following terms in the search boxes: Langston Hughes AND Hispanic poet*
ü Click Search.
ü Result: the first 25 retrieved citations will be displayed. Click citation titles of interest to view the full-text articles.
ü E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking Save Citation located above the article image. Click View Saved Citations. Select as an email instead of as a text file from the Export citations drop-down menu, and from the adjacent menu select printer-friendly instead of citation-manager. Click Export and proceed.
Project MUSE To search Project MUSE for literary articles:
ü Click the letter P on the Jump to menu.
ü Click Project MUSE.
ü Click Search.
ü Type your key terms in the search box adjacent to Search For:
ü Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, try typing the following terms in the search boxes:
“emily dickinson” and death
ü Click Search.
ü Result: the first 10 retrieved citations will be displayed. Click the citation titles of interest to view the full-text articles. If available, click View in PDF to see a full-text page image of the article.
ü E-mail the article you are currently viewing by going back to the Results Page and clicking the checkbox to the left of the article’s citation. Click Saved Marked Results. Click Email/Export Saved Results toward the top of the screen. Select E-mail under the heading Export marked results to. Click Export and proceed.
