Katherine H. Hankins Middle School

The Principal’s Corner:

Dear Parents,
Can failure be good? Although our schools and society sometimes instill the message that failure is bad, in life there are many things that can be very difficult to learn. For instance, we may fail many times before developing proficiency at skiing down a steep hill, hitting a baseball, playing a musical instrument, speaking a second language, or crafting a well-articulated speech. It takes effort, persistence, a positive attitude and reflection when we try to reach our goal.
In the awkward middle school years, where taking risks and fearing failure can be particularly daunting, students need the guidance, modeling and critical feedback from their teachers to be successful learners. As educators and parents, we must provide these critical supports to assist students in their quest to accomplish difficult tasks. Although failure can bring frustration, it can also build character and a sense of resilience in our children.
As educators, we never want to see a student fail; however, should a student fail a test, we want the student to learn where they went wrong and how they can improve so that they will do better next time. Just because a student fails a test doesn’t mean they are a failure. Encourage your student to learn from the mistake and try to improve for the next time. Many times a perceived failure can lead to a road paved with successes!

Recruitment:

During the last two weeks of school, a select group of 31 students and 6 teachers had the honor of representing Hankins Middle School at our 6 feeder schools - Burroughs, Hollinger’s Island, Griggs, Meadowlake, Pearl Haskew, and Nan Gray Davis. These students shared with 5th graders all the opportunities we offer at HMS such as band, robotics, advanced courses, technology, projects, scholars bowl, cheerleading, and athletics. Students and teachers represented the school and the community well. It was a wonderful experience to see the pride these students have in our school. We received fabulous feedback from faculty and students at the feeder school presentations. You should know that we are proud of our school and even more proud of our students! It is a great time to be a COUGAR! We look forward to seeing most – if not all – of the awesome 5th grade students in the fall!

Team Impact Assembly:

Hankins had a whole school assembly featuring Team Impact a group of professional athletes who travel around the country doing programs for schools about topics such as bullying. They brought their powerful message to HMS in an assembly for all students on January 27th. Hankins was one of only 4 MCPSS schools who got to enjoy a presentation by them.

The entire student body was in the gym for this engaging and intriguing assembly. The students were incredibly well-behaved even though they were all together. The student body really showed everyone what being a Hankins Cougar looks like! It was a great day to be a Cougar! Ask your student what happened during the assembly! You will be blown away too. Special thanks to West Mobile Baptist Church who sponsored their visit to Mobile County.
