Job Description

Key Purpose of the Job

Ensure that the EDGE of Existence programme delivers appropriate contributions to achieving ZSL’s mission.

Responsibility for Resources

People

Full line management of two employees and two volunteers/interns reporting directly to the post-holder; where appropriate, this will include conducting performance appraisals, setting objectives and providing support for both professional and personal development.

Oversight of two employees (indirect reports) who work two days per week on EDGE.

The post holder will also oversee co-ordination and support of approximately 24 people working under the programme as a whole overseas.

Other

· Financial resources. The post holder has full accountability for ensuring that the programme budget (£350,000) is appropriately spent, expenditure recorded, and reported on both internally and externally.

· Confidentiality - The post-holder has access to information about employees in his/her programme, about funding agreement budgets, terms and conditions and occasionally confidential corporate information and is expected to treat all such information in strict confidence.

Main duties and key responsibilities

· In the context of ZSL’s overall conservation strategy, the post holder oversees the production of strategies for their programme. The post holder also contributes to the production of the overall conservation strategy.

· In liaison with other appropriate staff at ZSL, the post holder develops and maintains effective working relationships with sponsors and donors in order to generate and secure funding for the EDGE of Existence programme.

· The post holder oversees the production of fundraising proposals for the programme. S/he contributes to fundraising proposals jointly with other programmes and other parts of ZSL, in order to raise funds for ZSL’s mission.

· The post holder oversees the production of financial and programmatic reports from projects to donors and for ZSL’s internal purposes.

· The post holder is responsible for ensuring that the programme is appropriately staffed and for the recruitment, safe working, direct or indirect line management and support of the programme team.

· The post holder works with ZSL Programme and Country Managers, and other staff, to oversee project design, implementation and management within the programme.

· The post holder oversees budget planning for all work with the relevant programme.

· The post holder is expected to supply appropriate information and images for use in ZSL’s website, annual reports, posters and other literature as needed.

· The post holder will represent ZSL in the media as needed; this may include television, radio and newspaper interviews.

· The post holder will represent ZSL at national and international conferences and workshops as needed, and will be expected to deliver talks and presentations to a range of audiences.

· The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all staff in the programme follow

administrative processes as necessary. In particular that health and safety processes are followed, that all project records are logged accurately in the ZSL Projects Database and that all programme reports are completed in a timely fashion.

Building relationships

· The post holder is expected to maintain good working relationships with staff in the programme and also to develop good relationships with other staff in ZSL, using tact and diplomacy as appropriate.

· The post holder will develop and maintain good working relationships with current and potential partner and donor organisations, communicating the aims and achievements of the programme in an engaging fashion.

Mental Demands

· The post holder is responsible for making key operational decisions, and sometimes strategic decisions, although often in consultation with other senior ZSL staff. Self-motivation and the ability to work on one’s own initiative is critical. For example

o Planning how to approach a difficult government agency

o Designing methodology for field surveys in unfamiliar terrain

o Selecting project components suitable for a particular funder.

Working Conditions

· This post is office based in the UK however there is a requirement to travel to field sites, country offices, conferences and workshops as required. The work may include short periods in field conditions.

Person Specification

All criteria in this person specification are essential unless otherwise stated as desirable.

Qualifications & Experience:

· Extensive experience in the planning, funding and implementation and reporting of conservation projects.

· BSc or higher qualification in an appropriate field is highly desirable.

· Prior experience in staff management and development.

· Track record in conservation project development.

· Track record in fundraising for conservation projects

Knowledge:

· A good grasp of conservation issues in an appropriate part of the world.

· A good knowledge of and contacts within funding bodies relevant to the programme.

Skills & Abilities:

· Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

· Must be highly computer literate in particular in MS office packages, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

· An ability to manage competing priorities and delegate effectively.

· Tact and diplomacy.

· An ability to work well under pressure.

Other Requirements:

· The post holder will work normal office hours but there will sometimes be a requirement to work out of office hours or over weekends to meet deadlines, and to travel over weekends.
