J. Michael Kramer, MD, MBA, is the Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer for Spectrum Health System, where he is leading system-wide initiatives in quality improvement, patient safety and advancing the clinical informatics strategy. Headquarter in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Spectrum health is an integrated delivery system providing services throughout West Michigan consisting of eight tertiary and community-based hospitals, more than 140 services sites, a network of over 1,500 physicians and the largest managed care plan in the region.
Dr. Kramer joined Spectrum Health in August 2011 as the Chief Medical Information Officer. In his CMIO roles, Dr. Kramer has been a national leader in designing methodologies for implementing and optimizing systems that assist clinicians in achieving high quality care and evidence based outcomes. Across the country, he has been involved in over 31 hospital CPOE or EMR go-lives. He has successfully achieved Meaningful Use stage 1 across 37 hospitals. Prior to joining Spectrum Health, Dr. Kramer was CMIO at Trinity Health and a Physician Informatics Lead at University of Michigan.
Dr. Kramer earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He has received board certification in internal medicine and pediatrics. Dr. Kramer brings to his role as CMIO over 15 years of information systems experience having provided leadership and expertise to clinical groups at the University of Michigan (U of M), from which he hails. His previous role was clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan. He previously practiced at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center along with the Huron Valley Hospitalists, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (SJMH), and as an urgent care physician with the Emergency Physicians Medical Group, also at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He had been named the 2009 “Up and Comers” list by Modern Healthcare magazine for his work to make electronic health records an effective tool for clinicians in the delivery of safe, high quality care. Dr. Kramer recently was co-author on two articles regarding the HITECH act and Meaningful Use in the Journal of Health Information Management, January 2012. In 2011 he published on process design for clinical information systems and clinical decision support methodologies.
