The State of Illinois Office of Tourism and Illinois Route 66 Events, Inc. have partnered to produce The International Route 66 Mother Road Festival on September 27, 28 and 29, 2002. The event will consist of 3,000 classic and specialty cars, motorcycles, campers and trucks, from all over the United States, Canada and parts of Europe.

Some 20,000 plus people are expected to attend and enjoy this nostalgic car show and street festival in Springfield, Illinois, the home of Abraham Lincoln and, some say, Bart Simpson. The International Route 66 Mother Road Festival will be staged within twenty-two city blocks of downtown Springfield, Illinois.

Scattered throughout the Springfield downtown area on Friday and Saturday you will find themed neighborhoods with free stage shows featuring 1964: The Tribute (The World’s Number One Beatles Tribute Act), The Blues Brothers Tribute featuring Snake and Dogwood Blues direct from the Legends show in Las Vegas, the Dean of Rockabilly, Dale “Susie Q” Hawkins, along with local and regional bands including top 40 rock “X-Krush,” pop rock with “Poprocks,” acoustic rock with “Mr. Opporknockity,” Dr. Wu’s Rock’n Soul Revue and the fantastic “Trailer Park Troubadours.”

Also entertaining festival-goers will be dozens of street attractions, kids events, specialty acts, as well as celebrity and behind the scenes workshops. There will be a massive swap meet, commercial and nostalgia exhibitors, arts and crafts expo and dozens of specialty foods.

This year the International Route 66 Mother Road Festival will feature the world famous all women’s trick motorcycle riding team, “Hardly Angels,” a Film Festival, plus

Route 66 Song and Film Competition. Special guests in attendance include Martin Milner, the star of “Adam 12” and TV’s “Route 66.” There will be a chance to meet and greet with several

Route 66 authors, artists, photographers including Pulitzer Prize Nominee and Route 66 author and historian, Michael Wallis at the Route 66 Authors & Artists Expo.

Friday night the National Historic Route 66 Federation will host the prestigious John Steinbeck Awards Gala featuring a keynote address by Martin Milner. This annual awards ceremony honors a select group of people who have contributed to the preservation of the Mother Road.

On Saturday night do not miss the “World’s Largest Sock Hop” starring Paul Revere and the Raiders, performing live their hits such as “Indian Reservation,” “Good Thing,” “Kicks,” and “Hungry”; Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone singing “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter,” “I’m Henry XIII,” “There’s a Kind of Hush” and “Can’t You Hear”; and Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters entertaining with such classics as “There Goes My Baby,” “Save the Last Dance For Me,” “Dance With Me,” “Under the Boardwalk,” “Up On the Roof” and “This Magic Moment.”

All attendees are invited to dress in 50’s and 60’s attire and dance to their heart’s content. The show is ticketed at $30, $25, $20 and $15.
