TCHOUKBALL

History:

In 1970, Dr. Hermann Brandt officially introduced Tchoukball pronounced “chookball.” Tchoukball derived its name from the sound the ball makes as it rebounds from the net. It can be played either inside or outside. It is played in many different countries across the world such as: France, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Mexico and many others.

Players & Equipment:

Tchoukball is played by two seven-player teams on a basketball court. Two official tchoukball rebound surfaces, two forbidden zones, and a tchoukball is all you need to play this exciting, fast pace game.

The rebound surfaces (which can be used by both teams) are placed at each end of the court. Each one is within a semi-circle line, that defines the “forbidden zone” which players are forbidden from entering.

Description of Game:

A coin toss will decide the team who will get the ball first. A team attempts to score by bouncing the ball off one of the rebound surfaces. After a team has been scored on, they will take the ball behind the baseline next to the frame were the point was scored to restart the game. Following a restart, the pass in-bound does NOT count as 1 of their 3 passes.

OFFENSE SCORES A POINT IF…

*the ball rebounds off the net and onto the floor before the defense can catch it.

*if a defender fails to control the ball by dropping it on the floor.

*touches a defender below the knees.

*while trying to catch the ball, a defender steps into the forbidden zone.

DEFENSE SCORES A POINT IF…

*an offensive player (shooter) takes a bad shot and misses the rebound surface.

*the ball rebounding from the net, after a shot, falls out of play or into the

forbidden zone.

*the offensive player shoots and the ball rebounds into him.

More on Offense—The offense may move the ball around the court according to the

RULE OF THREES:

*The player with the ball has only 3 seconds before he must pass to a teammate or shoot.

*The player with the ball is only allowed to take 3 steps on the floor before he must pass

to a teammate or shoot.

*The team with possession is allowed a maximum of 3 passes before shooting.

*Either team may shoot at either rebound surface, but the two teams combined may not

shoot at the same frame more than 3 times in a row.

More on Defense – All “active” defense is actually prohibited. The defense is not allowed to block the path or the view of opposing players or to intercept or deflect the offense’s passes. All of defense consists of anticipation the offense’s shot and being in the right spot to catch it on the rebound.

The Penalties/Faults

A player commits a penalty if:

· he takes more than 3 steps on the floor while in possession of the ball.

· he holds the ball for more than 3 seconds.

· he makes more than 3 passes (a pop up with the ball is considered a pass.)

· he drops the ball after it is passed or if the ball hits the ground (incomplete pass.)

· he voluntarily, or by error, catches a pass from the other team.

· he catches a ball off of the rebound surface that was shot by one of his teammates.

· he blocks his opponents from moving or stops them from freely passing the ball once they have gained possession.

· he shoots the ball and it hits one of the edges of the rebound surface and the path of the ball is changed, the team my NOT receive a point.

After a penalty, the ball is handed to the other team and the game continues from the spot where the penalty was committed. A pass must be made before shooting at the rebound surface.
