Submit your pre-registration information by Friday, May 17, 2013 to the Calvert County 4-H Office.

Registration for youth participants is $5.00. Please make your check payable to the Southern Maryland Livestock Committee and include it with your registration form and permission slip. Mail all forms to Elaine Bailey, University of Maryland Extension, P. O. Box 486, Prince Frederick, MD 20678. Note that food will NOT be available this year, and you should bring any snack items or lunch for you and for your dog.

2013 SOUTHERN MARYLAND

REGIONAL DOG SHOW

Sunday, June 2 - 9:00 a.m.

Charles County Fairgrounds - La Plata

Cost: $5.00 Registration Fee (DOES NOT include Lunch)

I. RULES

1.  All Dog Project-enrolled 4-H members in the 5 Southern Maryland counties are welcome to participate and MUST have a Dog Card on file with their respective County 4-H office. The Dog Card should be accompanied by a current vaccination certificate reflecting vaccination for Rabies. Vaccination for ParvoVirus and additional canine diseases is strongly recommended. All dogs entered in this show must have required vaccinations prior to participating.

2.  Junior exhibitors are 4-Hers who are 8-10 years of age as of 1/1/2013.

Intermediate exhibitors are 4-Hers who are 11-13 years of age as of 1/1/2013.

Senior exhibitors are 4-Hers who are 14-18 years of age as of 1/1/2013.

(4-H members who compete must be at least junior age, per MD 4-H Guidelines).

First-year designation applies to those 4-Hers who have not competed in a dog show event (Fitting and Showing or Obedience, respectively) in a previous year. Having competed in a 4-H Dog Show earlier during this calendar year does not remove the first-year designation. This designation applies to the 4-Her, not to the dog being exhibited.

3. Both purebred and mixed breed dogs may be entered in this competition.

4. Female dogs in season are not permitted to compete.

5. The judge may excuse from the ring:

a. Any handler who willfully interferes with another participant or dog.

b. Any handler who abuses his/her dog in the ring.

c. Any dog that cannot be controlled by its handler.

d. Any obviously ill dog.

e. Any dog that shows viciousness.

6. Good sportsmanship is expected of all participants and spectators.

7. Suggested attire for Handlers:

o  Boys - Slacks, collared shirt (tie recommended)

o  Girls - Skirt or slacks, blouse/shirt. NOTE: Skirts should be of modest length and should not interfere with or restrict handler’s movement.

o  Both male and female handlers should wear shoes appropriate for active movement (i.e. no flip-flops or high heels).

8. Exhibitors must use proper training equipment.

a. For Obedience classes a six-foot leash and well-fitting training collar are required. The training collar may be chain, nylon web, or cloth. The leash must be leather, nylon web, cotton rope, or cloth. No chain or retractable/flexi-leashes are allowed.

b. For Fitting and Showing classes an appropriate lead (show lead) should be used. Obedience training collars and leashes are not appropriate for Fitting and Showing classes. The judge may refuse to allow or deduct points for a Handler’s use of an inappropriate lead.

9. For Fitting and Showing classes, all grooming of dogs should be done by the 4-Her, except specialized breed grooming such as coat stripping, plucking, or clipping No artificial preparations such as powder or corn starch may be left on the dog.

10. All 4-H'ers will be expected to care for and clean up after their dogs. Participants must bring their own water, food, baggies for waste, etc. It is highly recommended participants bring their own bowls for water and food. Sharing of bowls between animals is discouraged due to possible transmission of diseases or parasites.

11. Participation premiums will be paid at the rate of $2.00 per dog. Premiums will be paid for a maximum of 2 dogs per 4-Her.

12. In general, American Kennel Club rules governing the standards of performance and judging of Obedience Trials will be observed. See attached class descriptions and score sheets for further details.

13. Placings are at the discretion of the judge and are final.

14. Ribbons will be awarded for places 1-4. The blue ribbon winner earning the highest score in his/her class will compete for Champion/Reserve Champion awards.

15. The Southern Maryland Regional Dog Show has been approved as a “qualifier” show for the 2013 State Fair. Those who place 1-4 in their classes will be eligible to compete at the Maryland State Fair 4-H Dog Show, and each must notify their UME County 4-H office to enter.

16. Pre-registration is due by Thursday, May 17th in the Calvert County Extension Office. Mailing address: Elaine Bailey, University of Maryland Extension, Calvert County Office, P.O. Box 486, Prince Frederick, MD 20678. Make your check payable to: Southern Maryland Livestock Committee in the amount of $5.00.
