How to Become a VTS in Small Animal Internal Medicine

Requirements for Application

1. Copy of diploma or state’s credentialing agency

2. Signed waiver, Release and Indemnity Agreement Form

3. Completed professional history and employment form

a. Minimum of 3 years (6,000 hours) as a credentialed technician in the field of internal medicine

b. Experience must be completed within 5 years of application submission

c. At least 75% (4,500 hours) must be specifically in internal medicine

4. Continuing Education Form

a. Minimum of 40 hours of continuing education

b. 70% must be in internal medicine specialty

c. 30% must be in general internal medicine topics

d. Proof of attendance is required

e. CE must be RACE approved

5. Submit 3 potential exam questions for the specialty of internal medicine

6. 2 letters of recommendation

7. Completed advanced skills requirements

a. Completion of at least 80% of the skills

b. Skills must be cross referenced with the case logs

i. 50% of the skills must be cross referenced

8. Completed Advanced Knowledge Requirements Sign off Sheet

9. Case Log

a. October 1 of preceding year to September 30th of the year of the application

b. Utilize AIMVT Case Log Form

c. Minimum of 50 cases must be recorded and accepted

d. Can submit up to 75 cases

e. Cases must reflect management and knowledge of SAIM

f. Cases must show your mastery of advanced skills and patient care

g. Choose a variety of cases to show off all your abilities

10. Case Reports

a. 4 case reports are required

b. Choose cases that will demonstrate your understanding of pathophysiology, advanced nursing skills, advanced patient care and how you contributed to the case.

c. Must be written in 3rd person

d. Spelling and grammar must be flawless

11. Examination after accepted application

a. You will be notified via email if you get to sit for the test

b. Start studying EARLY!!

c. Utilize the suggested reading list on the website

d. Make a study schedule and stick to it

e. The exam will be in conjunction with ACVIM

f. You will be notified via email and receive your certificate in the mail when you pass
