Standard SS8H7: The Student will evaluate key political, social, and economic changes that occurred in Georgia between 1877 and 1918.

d. Give reasons for World War I and describe Georgia’s contributions.

SS8H8: The student will analyze the important events that occurred after World War I and their impact on Georgia.

a. Describe the impact of the boll weevil and drought on Georgia.

b. Explain economic factors that resulted in the Great Depression.

DAILY TEACHING STRATEGIES

MONDAY:
Opening:
1.  Where did World War I take place?
2.  What does neutral mean?
E.Q.: Why do you think the U.S. would try and be neutral during WWI?
Work Period: T will review the causes and main ideas of World War I using a PowerPoint and YouTube videos from Mojo.com. S will take notes on MANIA and brainstorm about Georgia’s contributions to the War.
Closing: What role did nationalism play in the Great War? Why did the U.S. remain neutral through most of the war?
Homework: Begin working on the worksheet for GA’s contributions to WWI.
TUESDAY:
Opening:
1.  What is nationalism?
2.  What was the Lusitania?
E.Q.: Why is propaganda used during war-time?
Work Period: S will read Section 2, Chapter 20 and finish working on the textbook activity regarding GA’s contributions during the war or the Zimmerman telegram. S will define propaganda and complete a Primary Document Evaluation sheet on WWI propaganda posters. S will evaluate whether the U.S. should have entered the war.
Closing: T-P-S Why would the U.S. send 100,000 men to fight in Europe? How would it effect Georgians?
WEDNESDAY:
Opening:
1.  What is a drought?
2.  What is the boll weevil?
E.Q.: How would drought and the boll weevil effect farmers in Georgia?
Work Period: T will introduce the Roaring 20s and the Great Depression. S will read and take notes categorizing major changes during the 1920’s. S and T will review main ideas from the reading.
Closing: Think-Pair-Share What caused the Great Depression?
THURSDAY:
Opening:
1.  What happened on Black Tuesday?
2.  Why did so many banks close during the Great Depression?
E.Q.: Why do you think the stock market crashed?
Work Period: S will complete a Graphic Organizer on causes of the Great Depression and life during the Depression. S and T will share information and review the reasons for the Great Depression and conditions during it.
Closing: What are 3 things that caused the Great Depression?
Homework: S will complete the budget sheet using prices during the Depression.
FRIDAY:
Opening:
1.  How high was unemployment during the Depression?
2.  What happened when 9,000 banks closed their doors?
E.Q.: How does high unemployment affect family spending?
Work Period: S will work in groups to complete a chart on the Causes of the Great Depression or Life During the Depression. S will be assigned to groups of 3 or 2 based on their overall performance in the class and on recent assessments. The groups will be heterogeneous and each group will receive a specific task to complete along with their chart.
Closing: Select groups will share with the class what they completed throughout the class period.
Homework: Write a 5-sentence paragraph outlining three causes of the Great Depression.
