High School Library Media Student Services

1st Semester 2007

2 Student Library Media Services

Our goal in the Library Media Center (LMC) is to provide an environment for academic and leisure study. By providing a quiet environment with print and electronic resources that are well rounded we allow groups to work together but not impede on the independent study of others.

If a student’s behavior does not contribute to the academic tone of the LMC privileges may be revoked.

Your Library Media Specialist

Mrs. DaShannon Lovin is the Library Media Specialist at Blanchester High School. She graduated from Cumberland College with a Bachelor of Arts in Education teaching English and Spanish. She acquired her Master’s of Educational Technology and Licensure from Wright State University.

Visiting the LMC

You can visit the LMC one of three ways.

1- with your teacher and class

2- from a class individually or with a group on a pass

3- from study hall as a group or with an individual pass (please see study hall notes at the end of the newsletter)

If you absolutely need to come to the LMC on your own you will need to obtain a PASS ahead of time from Mrs. Lovin. You may not leave a class to obtain a pass. Scheduled classes do have priority over walk ins or study hall.

Students must sign in when entering the LMC without a whole class.

Students must always sign on and off the computer. STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR HAVING SIGNED THE WILDCAT AGENDA BOOK AND UNDERSTANDING THE GUIDELINES.

Once you are in the LMC you may not run errands on a pass. No restroom, locker or any other pass will be given unless it is an emergency. Refer to the Wildcat Student Agenda Handbook page 16/28 for behavior expectations including:

¨ stay seated until the bell rings when not conducting library business

¨ no food, beverages, music

¨ show respect for everyone and do not be insubordinate

¨ computers are for school purposes only

¨ no communication without permission

¨ the media center is for studying or reading not staring or sleeping

¨ do not move furniture

¨ one student per table from study hall or testing

Books

W

e currently have over 5000 books in the Blanchester High School Library Media Center. In addition to books that support the curriculum we have books for individual interests on topics such as music and sports. We do take requests, so stop by and let us know what you like to read.

Students may check out two items at a time for two weeks at a time. Overdue fines are ten cents a day. If the fine exceeds the replacement of the item, the student will pay only the replacement cost, providing the student returns the item in good condition. If the item is lost the student must pay replacement cost plus 30% to cover cataloguing, shipping and handling. Once payment is made there are no reimbursements. See Wildcat Student Agenda Blanchester High School 2007-08 Student Handbook page 16 Use of the Media Center. Also see Conduct in the Study Hall- High School.

Just a tip: When looking for a book, keep in mind the Dewey Decimal System. Dewey books are the books you normally use for research. They mainly contain non- fiction books; however some mythological and classical literature is contained in this section. The books are arranged within disciplines, not subject areas, by number and the first three letters of the author’s last name. For example, plants may be in the Science, History, and Arts disciplines. Think of how Wal-Mart is organized; it is the same concept, toothpaste here, and shoes over there. Subject numbers range from 000-999. For example 591.023 HUR.

Fiction is arranged by the first three letters of the author’s last name, or if it is an edited book by the first three letters of the title. For example, FIC SMI.

Our LMC book spine labels are in transition. Spine labels should use a Dewey number FIC for fiction, VER for vertical file, or REF for reference. For example, 531.023 HUR, FIC SMI, VER PLA, or REF 531 HUR. However some spine labels have a variety of other markings. Please ask if you are confused by this; we are working to remedy this.

The DDS, created by Melvil Dewey, is comprised of ten general disciplines listed below.

000-099 Generalalities: encyclopedias

100-199 Philosophy & Psychology: paranormal, ethics

200-299 Religion: Bible, theology

300-399 Social Sciences: law, education, customs

400-499 Language: dictionaries, grammar, foreign

500-599 Natural Sciences & Mathematics: animals

600-699 Technology (Applied Sciences): medicine

700-799 Arts Fine & decorative: drawing, sports

800-899 Literature & rhetoric: Poetry, plays, classics

900-999 History & Geography: travel

(920 is Collective biography

921is Individual biography)

Each of these disciplines is then broken into more categories until each type of book has its own number.

Contemporary fiction, which technically falls in the 800’s under literature, is shelved separately by the first three letters of the author’s last name.

New Book Display

Each month we receive new books and materials. Our new books are displayed in the front of the LMC until they are checked out or a new shipment arrives. The titles of new books are published in the semester Bookends newsletter.

Junior Library Guild

We receive one book per month chosen by the Junior Library Guild. These books are usually of high interest and win awards. This book is displayed until the next month’s selection arrives.

There is also a RESEARCH AT BLANCHESTER packet available for student use. Please use responsibly.

We have several college and career videos that may be checked out over night. The college videos are located on the shelves by the magazines.

We also have access to videos through the Wilmington Clinton County Area Media Center. These require ordering ahead of time. You can look your topic up in the print catalog or go online to find the video you need. I will then order it and you may view it in the LMC during 2 - 5 days. The website is http://union.infohio.org/wcamc.The LMC will provide a TV/VCR to view school related material.

VERTICAL FILES

Vertical files hold items not separately cataloged such as pamphlets and newspapers. If you are using the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) the vertical files have VER as the call number. Vertical files are in storage; ask a student aide or the librarian to retrieve them for you. If you have information you would like to contribute, such as pamphlets that could be helpful, they are welcome.

STUDENT RESOURCE AREA

This area houses resources frequently used by students as well as a standing height worktable. It has a stapler, ruler, crayons, book covers, tape, paperclips, glue/ glue stick, pens, pencils, markers, colored pencils, paper, old magazines and newspapers.

RESOURCES

T

he student computers in the computer lab and the LMC have Internet access and most basic programs including Word, Excel, and Power Point.

Guidelines for all computers:

1- Students must have read and signed the Wildcat Student Handbook.

2- Sign in on the sheet provided.

3- Students may only do and print school related work and material. If you encounter an undesirable site, turn your screen off and notify the Library Media Specialist.

4- Save work to your own disk.

5- Close out of all programs when finished. Leave the computer as you found it and push chair back in place.

You must come in with your class and teacher to use the lab computers. The individual student computers in the LMC can be used by any student. It is your responsibility to follow these policies. If you do not agree to policies do not use the LMC computers. See Wildcat Student Agenda Blanchester High School 2007-08 Student Handbook page 16/28.

Do keep in mind the school operates on Office and Word 2000. If you have issues opening a document here you have opened at home try saving as a Office Word 2000 document at home.

DATABASES

Ohio has several databases on the Internet at http://infohio.org/ containing a plethora of indexed information.

STUDY HALL!!!

The procedure for students visiting the library media center during their study hall is as follows.

1. The monitor must wait for Mrs. Lovin to come to the class or call. If the study hall is not called only those with a pass signed by the librarian will be admitted.

2. If it is clear for any student the monitor can send up to 8 students but the students need to be escorted by Mrs. Lovin or be given a pass. When students return to class Mrs. Lovin will telephone or return them on the pass.

3. Stay until the end or sign out and obtain a pass back to study hall.

The LMC is open all day every day but if there is a class or a group, or groups from classes the study hall may not be invited everyday or even for days at a time.
