Parklands Primary School

Headteacher’s Report to Governors Summer Term 2016

Dates of the Term:

Monday 18th April to Friday 27th May

Monday 6th June to Friday 22nd July

Training Days: Monday 25th – Wednesday 27th July.

Personal feelings: We are still awaiting our Ofsted and are fully prepared for the call. The data shows that progress continues to accelerate in each YG. The issues regarding B v G and PP v non PP have been explained with success to the SIA. We are still (in Y2) behind where we need to be in regard to ARE; but if progress continues then the gap will be closed.

Inspire Maths continues to engage the children. There has been an internal promotion with Sam Rennison and Sarah Innes being appointed Literacy co ordinators after being interviewed by Kate Gilmore and Julia Thubron. I am ecstatic to announce that Laura Darley was successful in becoming the permanent Assistant head Teacher; testimony to her hard work and determination. Julia Thubron will continue in her role as Acting Assistant Head until April 2017 when Alex Winter is due to return.

Spring term saw the school work for x5 days with Karen Knapper (Maths School Improvement Consultant). The feedback that Karen received was outstanding. She followed the same cycle that Jean Hirst used. Observe; put in 121 training and then revisit to measure the impact. Karen also worked with Early Years and with the TA’s.

Jean Hirst worked on 121 coaching with each YG and also spent an additoional x2 hours with each Member of staff addressing issues arising from Triangulation. Summer term will see a re visit for the triangulation where we expect to see the impact of Jean’s work reflected in the children’s books.

JJ, his mum and myself attended the Grand Final of the Joke Voice Final inside the Speakers House inside the House of Commons. It was a wonderful experience for a child who had never been on a train and a Mum who had never been to London. I personally bought TJ his very own 3 piece suit so he could be ‘mini me’ for the day. I am so proud to say that he WON – we are so proud – he shone and made everyone proud. Myself and TJ was on the BBC breakfast News and made an appearance on Look North! Virgin trains were very kind to upgrade us all to 1st class on both legs of the journey.

Look North followed up with a feature on how we spend Pupil Premium which showed the school as a vibrant happy place. The Next Generation sport guys were filmed reading to our KS1 boys.

Staffing.

In the whole term – 0 day (£0) was spent on supply. This means since September 1st 2015 we have spent x1 day (£220) only on supply. Laura Darley continues to do a fantastic job in utilising staff out of class including myself to cover classes. We did an analysis of staff sickness and absence from Oct 1st 2015 to April 4th 2016:

Parklands Primary School
Sickness Monitoring - October 15 to April 16
Sickness: total days / Factor
13 mths to Sept 15 / 6 mths to April 16 / 0.46 / Projection*
Teachers / 93.31 / 39.15 / 0.42 / 84.8
TAs / 331.76 / 59.54 / 0.18 / 129
Admin / 2 / 0 / 0.00
Learning Support / 70 / 50.54 / 0.72 / 109.5
Lunchtime Support / 134 / 43 / 0.32 / 93.17
Total / 631.07 / 192.23 / 0.30 / 416.5
Previous analysis was over 13 months, this is 6 months so a factor of 0.46
Overall sickness has improved by around 30%
The greatest improvement is Teaching Assistants
Learning Support includes 1 member of staff on long term sickness (44 days)
* number of days absence extrapolated out to 13 months

With Kath H resigning and living in Australia now we had an excellent 6 weeks with her in order to train the acting AHT in her behavioural role and to prepare the new RP teacher – Helen Barkakoti.

A new staffing structure is to be presented to Governors which will see the school run with x2 AHT. The money saved with no Deputy pay will see experts ‘bought’ in as with this term – this is the way forward, the future. The Governors will be presented with what the school needs – not another SLT member but an outstanding LEADING PRACTITIONER in KS1. AFTER BUDGET RELEASEDThis

Jean Hirst worked for x1 day a fortnight last term. She did the follow up to the results from the Triangulation conducted in the Autumn Term. A real success this has been.

Ian Stokes has shone with his data analysis. He produced a detailed report from the Spring Term in house data. He will begin work from the SATs in July providing a report for the start of the new term in September.

Human Resources – Yvonne Reynolds worked (free) x1 day a month to work on Stage 1 and Stage 2 sickness meetings. Thus all the DHT roles are covered by industry experts.

Learning Mentors re structure and Child Protection updates. Sadly with KH leaving for Australia; KR leaving to return to University; BO leaving to take on a new role in the PRU; it meant our extensive list of Child Protection officers was depleted. LB and DP both updated their status by attending a x1 day course. I have my date booked in for June and JT was sent on the x3 day course. The authority undertook a Safeguarding Audit (at my request) in March and found many positives and examples of good practice. There were 0 zero areas of concer.

Exciting Things In School Last Term.

Buisness in the Community

  • Lloyds Bank provide x17 readers per week working in Y4 Y5 Y6. Such was the enjoyment they increased this to 23 from Jan 4th.
  • Pratt Solicitors from Leeds send in x3 Maths volunteers every week to work with Y6
  • I attended a BITC meeting and presented a DVD of the impact that they have had in our school. A little tear was shed which aided a £5000 Charity Grant from John Lewis – who will open in Leeds in September. We have in addition been invited to attend the opening of the store. £10 000 funding was also gained from Enterprise Car Rentals who are based on the Seacroft Industrial Estate.
  • Parklands has been selected to host the 2016 GIVE and GAIN day. This is where we welcome 100 volunteers into our school to do a x1 day challenge….. This will see fences painted; murals painted; sensory gardens created and lots lots more. This is on May 20th.
  • Louis Smith MBE (Olympic Silver medallist 2012 and Strictly Come Dancing Champion) had the most amazing 3 hours with our fantastic children. He was overwhelmed with his Wall of Fame and his Parklands Video we made for him. He was treated to a spectacular gymnastic display and faced some challenging questions from our Nurture Children. He left us and spent 14 minutes at Leeds East before returning here. He sent around 20 tweets sharing his love of the school and his day.
  • TJ National Joke Voice Final. Congratulations to TJ for making the Grand Final I am pleased to say that he WON – what a day. To see such confidence shown and the way he delivered his joke was outstanding.
  • Y6 had a 3 hour session with the Northern Ballet Dance instructors before being treated to a production of Swann Lake at the Grand Theatre.
  • Y6 Residential at Winmarleigh Hall. Quite simply in 22 years, this is the greatest set of children that I have taken away. Polite, supportive, hard working; team builders; brave superstars (who were all asleep by 10pm every night). A real pleasure – follow the adventures on Twitter as they did a 30 foot abseil; climbed and jumped onto a trapeze 40 feet in the air.
  • Y5 Residential Whitby. Even having to get TJ down to London mid residential didn’t stop the children from gaining so much from this experience. Staying inside the famous Abbey walls was a mesmerising experience for all involved. They went on the RNLI lifeboat; hunted for dinosaur fossils; had ghost stories inside the graveyard. Again the politeness and friendliness shone through in our wonderful children.
  • Tim Rylands – Inspiring Writing. Tim spent 2 days teaching every child in our school through the Myst computer game. He showed how when you can inspire children to write you can teach x80 in one lesson. It was amazing. Tim also spent 3 hours delivering a Twilight session to all staff including our family of schools.
  • Parklands Great British Bake Off – with over 145 entries the event judged by last year’s beaten finalist Sandy Docherty was a massive success. The children helped raise over £200 for the school in Zimbabwe. Some of the designs and creations was exceptional. Thanks to Sharon for helping to make this day a brilliant success. For the record the prizes that Sharon made herself went the extra mile with the winners having their own Parklands Baking Champion apron … and all finalists having their own wooden spoon specially written on.
  • Look North – a brilliant piece on the school was shared re PP spending
  • Leeds Xmas Lights winners 2016 – 4 children from Y5/6 won the prestigious Leeds Xmas Lights design – sponsored by Northern Power….. their design will be made into a real XMAS light to be displayed with all the other Xmas Lights on Dortmund Street and will be officially switched on by a celebrity in December.

WRITERS of the WEEK – has been a HUGE success. Every Monday I see the WOW from each class. They are presented with a laminated certificate and are treated to tea and biscuits with myself.

TIMES TABLE KNOCKOUT – equally to the weekly WOW- the X Table Knockout has seen ALL the classes really get to know their X tables with pace and accuracy. The class champions all play the Grand Final live on the 215pm Friday Celebration Assembly. Parents are amazed at the speed the children show.

WRITING MODERATION. I am very excited when I see our children’s books compared to books of children in other schools. We are writing more than other schools and our AWL tracking system is the best I have seen due to how specific it is. The content of the writing is better. HOWEVER we won’t have as many children who will eXceed ARE as we still have spelling issues (this is getting better however – 2016 17 = impact) and Handwriting – this will be addressed in the summer term.

INSPIRE MATHS – Staff, children, parents and myself are very happy. 5 days training was conducted last term by Karen Knapper to all staff and TA’s. Her evaluation was that we are heading in the right direction with the children becoming a lot more confident in the applying of maths. The YG’s are happy delivering the new innovative way of teaching. Monitoring will occur this half term.

FORUM MEETING – I created a new Forum to ensure that multi agencies work closely together. Learning Mentors from us; Seacroft Grange and Grange Farm meet with the Police and the Social Services teams. It was great for ‘good practice’ and sharing ideas.

Performance Management

Performance Management mid term reviews took place in April 2017. All staff had their evidence in place.

Status of the SEND Register

7 EHC Plans (2 Children are in the process of assessment to receive and EHC Plan for July 2016 3 Conversions to EHC Plans are taking place in May 2016).

7 children with Statements.

12 of the above children are in RP. 1 child with a statement in is a mainstream class in Year 3. Another child is currently on dual reg at the Pupil Support Centre)

75 Children in Total on SEN register. All with the status of SEN Support (Code K on SIMMS)

This gives a total of 89 SEND children in school.

The status SEN Support replaces school action or school action plus in the new Code of Practice. The status of SEN Support puts the pupil at the heart of the provision, and encourages schools to respond more flexibly to pupils’ needs. Unlike the old system, this new approach will focus the system on the impact of the support provided to that individual child, rather than how children access support according to the category they fit into.
