Highlights
Ø Mt. SAC received a grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, Equipment Funds for Nursing and Allied Health Programs. This 18-month, $144,892 grant will enable the medical services and respiratory therapy programs to purchase much-needed, updated equipment. In addition, the division will be able to renovate and adequately equip the simulation lab, where faculty and students may access human patient simulators.
Ø Mt. SAC received a second grant for $186,557 from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office to support the Agriculture Teacher Preparation Pipeline, which involves faculty and students from the high school, community college, and university levels. The purpose of the grant is to develop CTE teacher pathways (specifically in agriculture) in conjunction with feeder high schools and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, that will enable students interested in teaching in the agriculture field to begin their teacher preparation at the community college and complete their studies at the university. Grant activities include: outlining existing coursework and certificate/degree/ credentialing requirements; identifying gaps in 2+2+2 pathways and revising, enhancing, or creating new curriculum to address these gaps; targeted outreach to and recruitment of high school, community college, and university agriculture students, teacher preparation students, and students-at-large; and retention strategies to keep students in the pipeline through graduation.
Ø Mt. SAC received a second grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office’s California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Preparation Program. This $500,000 grant prepares students from the high school class of 2007 to pass the CAHSEE and complete all required coursework for high school graduation. Program activities include: the revision and/or development of non-credit basic skills courses; outreach and recruitment through coordinated efforts with feeder school districts; pre- and post-testing and placement; intensive support services; and tracking the progress of each student served.
Ø Mt. SAC received a second round of funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s Upward Bound Program. This four-year, $1,112,400 grant serves students in La Puente High School and Ganesha Senior High School, targeting minority, at-risk, low-income, and/or potential first-generation college students. These students are encouraged to complete high school and enroll in college and supported in the following ways: after-school tutoring; Saturday Academies; instruction in writing, mathematics, and study skills; academic, financial, and personal counseling; mentoring programs; guest speakers and presentations on college preparation and career exploration; assistance in preparing for college and completing required forms; field trips; college campus tours; parental involvement; and a summer residential program.
Ø Mt. SAC received a $517,793 Industry-Driven Regional Collaboratives grant from the California Community Colleges System Office. Mt. SAC will lead a consortium of six community colleges in the development of a regional simulation center. This center will have multiple functions: (a) facilitate the use of human patient simulation in curricula across varied allied health programs, fostering an interdisciplinary approach to simulation and skills enhancement; (b) serve as a clinical site for students displaced as a result of accreditation visits at clinical site locations; (c) function as a disaster training center, as mobile equipment may be utilized at any location for the training of simulation and disaster preparedness, including cardiac arrest, mass casualty preparedness, natural disasters, fire, and bio-terrorism; and (d) provide a technician training site for the West Coast for training of infant, child, and adult human patient simulator maintenance and repair technicians.
