With mines across Alberta and Saskatchewan and extensive resources for future mining, PMRL’s vision is to position coal as a sustainable, affordable, efficient source of fuel. Prairie Mines and Royalty Ltd is currently looking for a Geologist/Geological Technician at its Highvale Mine. The Highvale Mine is located on the south side of Lake Wabamun, approximately 70 kms west of Edmonton. Production from the mine is approximately 13 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal annually which is supplied for power generation at TransAlta Utilities’ Sundance and Keephills generating stations.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for overall coal quality at the Highvale Mine. This includes coordinating activities between the coal handling plant and the plant generation group as well as ongoing communication with the plant to ensure that they are receiving optimal coal to meet their parameters. Duties include blending for ash, moisture, sodium and calorific value so as to maximize power production. On a daily basis you would be required to set and meet target coal blends, create and update models of live coal stockpiles, as well as provide coal quality reports detailing the delivered coal quality and the plant burn to our contract employer, TransAlta Utilities.
Qualifications
You will have a geology degree or diploma with 3 to 5 years experience. Specific knowledge of geological models, statistics and spreadsheets would be considered as strong assets. Effective interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are essential.
