In Memoriam -- John Bodine Babcock
John Bovine Babcock of Amenia, NY and Jupiter Island, FU died on September 17, 2010, after a long illness. He was 85 years old. Mr. Babcock had a long successful career in the magazine business. Beginning in the early 1950's at McGraw Hill, Inc. and ending in the 1990's as a publishing consultant. He spent over 20 years at the American Business Press, Inc. where, as president, he was the force behind the merger of the controlled (freely) circulated magazine association with the paid circulated ABP group. Later, Mr. Babcock co-founded Kobak Business Models, Inc, a provider of software solutions to magazine publishers, and he consulted on many magazine start-ups during his career. He also owned Industrial Design magazine in the 1980's. And he served on the boards of the Ad Council and the Killdonan School. Born in Schenectady, NY and raised in New York City, Mr. Babcock attended The Hotchkiss School and Yale College. He received his B.A. from Columbia University. He was a veteran of World War II and the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Babcock is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lois Scherer Babcock, sons, John Babcock, Jr. and Frederick Babcock, daughter Joanne Wilmerding. Daughter, Linda Wilson predeceased him. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The Babcocks lived for many years in West Orange, NJ; in the mid 1960's they moved to Sharon, CT, eventually settled on a farm in Stanfordville, NY. In lieu of flowers, Maplebrook School, Amenia, NY. Service at St. Peters Church, Lithgow, NY September 25th at 11am.
