Overview of GEAR UP Summer Residential Programs
For summer 2014, GEAR UP NC provides GEAR UP students the opportunity to attend residential summer enrichment STEM and/or leadership development programs at four-year postsecondary institutions. During each program, family members and chaperones are invited to attend at least the closing session. The goal of these programs is to increase student’ and families’ knowledge of postsecondary options and financing, and to prepare students academically and socially for high school and postsecondary education.
GEAR UP NORTH CAROLINA SUMMER RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS
UNC Greensboro – Leadership: The Civil Rights Movement
This program will expose students to relevant role models of leadership (in terms of race/ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status (SES), and gender) and help them reflect on how educational attainment could be an important component of their future as leaders. By holding this event on our campus and including current UNCG undergraduates, representatives from Admissions/Financial Aid, and faculty/staff from UNCG, NC A&T, and Guilford College, this program will also (1) increase student knowledge of college and (2) increase student knowledge of financial aid. Finally, by including family members in the final session, this program hopes to increase family engagement with the college going process, another of GEAR UP’s stated goals. Specifically, GEAR UP students will meet and interact with (1) UNCG students who are part of the UNCG Guarantee scholarship program for first generation or low SES applicants; (2) School of Education faculty members and graduate students; (3) staff members from the Office of Leadership and Service Learning and Team Quest experiential learning unit; (4) faculty from North Carolina A&T State University, who will help us reflect on the civil rights movement and the role played by four A&T students in the Woolworth’s sit in; (5) faculty from Guilford College, who will help us reflect on the Quaker tradition of leadership in civil rights issues; and (6) faculty from UNCG, who will help us reflect on the role of women in sustaining the sit in demonstrations. Other learning experiences will include a trip to the International Museum of Civil Rights in the Woolworth building in downtown Greensboro, video clips from a PBS series about Latino high school students who were motivated to overcome obstacles and graduate, and a reflective/creative project that will allow the GEAR UP students to visually represent how they see themselves developing as leaders in the future.
Dates: June 18-20, 2014
Grades: Rising 8th graders
Winston-Salem State University – Leadership: Teamwork and Technology
This program will address GEAR UP’s goals and objectives in three ways: (1) engage participants in quality experiences that enhance and enrich 21st century academic knowledge and skills, (2) provide exposure to various career options and pathways beginning at the secondary level, and (3) bring awareness of college and career options and support/resources to participants’ parents. This program will utilize an integrated approach to leadership development and college readiness through team and leadership building. Activities during this program will support academic threads that also empower youth to become leaders. The WSSU staff operates under the auspice that youth must be academically successful in order to be recognized as a positive leader, but also that these ancillary experiences impact and motivate students to succeed in school environments. Another theme that has been incorporated into our activities is technology integration. Recent studies have found that although youth are used to “plugging-in” to interact with each other, those in underrepresented groups often still lack the access and abilities to use technology in school or work environments as compared to their peers. Sessions will include a parent orientation, who am I activity, team building 101/102, presentation skills 101, and STEM/college readiness initiatives that connect students to technology through making public service announcements with the use of iPads and through several design challenges to solve real world problems as a team.
Dates: July 21-23, 2014
Grades: Rising 8th graders
Winston-Salem State University – STEM (Algebra): Got STEM? Crime Science Investigation
This program will provide educational opportunities in math and science through the use of hands-on activities related to crime scene investigation (CSI). Topics will include chromatography, fingerprinting, forensic impression evidence, blood typing and blood splatter trajectory. Using the CSI techniques they have learned, students will solve various case studies. Students will continue to develop their investigative skills and will put them to the test with a week ending crime scene investigation. The program will also cover algebra applications utilized in crime scene investigations (CSI), science tasks that satisfy state science standards, CSI themed activities, and college readiness enrichment. Students will receive 5.25 hours of STEM instruction each day and all academic assignments will be aligned with adopted NC state standards. Furthermore, students will interact with guest STEM speakers and participate in college readiness experiences. This program will have a Welcome Session and Closing Session open to families and chaperones.
