An Invitation to Apply

for an Elementary Teaching Position

The Bronx Charter School for Children

Bronx, NY

The Opportunity

The Bronx Charter School for Children (BCSC) is seeking exceptional Special Education teachers who are passionate about making a significant impact in the classroom and who want to be part of a personalized, vibrant professional learning community at an established independent charter school in the South Bronx’s Mott Haven neighborhood. BCSC offers faculty the unique opportunity to work in a school that provides substantial resources and support so that teachers may excel, grow and thrive.

Our ideal teacher candidates will have a track record of success in dramatically increasing student performance in schools without selective admissions, a sense of urgency and accountability for student success, and demonstrated expertise in their instructional subject areas. The successful candidates will be those able to work both independently and in teams to continually refine curriculum to maximize student achievement. The ability to work with students one-on-one to address individual learning needs and to use student performance data to drive instructional improvement is essential.

History, Mission and Current Context

Opened in 2004 with 132 students in Kindergarten and 1st grade and located in the poorest Congressional District in the United States, the Bronx Charter School for Children now serves 432 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. BCSC enjoys a strong school community, a highly engaged constituency, and financial stability. Taking seriously the challenge of providing a rigorous elementary academic program in a safe and nurturing environment, instilling habits of inquiry and critical thinking in its students, BCSC is presently growing the academic program in new ways to integrate Common Core standards and engage all faculty in developing, refining and teaching the curriculum. The Bronx Charter School for Children sees its larger mission as one of helping to break the cycle of poverty affecting the majority of our students and families.

Why Choose to Teach at BCSC?

We’re different - in important ways - from many other New York City schools. As a standalone school, we’re able to focus squarely on our core business – teaching and learning – while preserving our child and family-friendly environment. We’re fostering a culture of professional creativity, guided by a new vision for teaching, teacher’s roles, and the conditions needed to enable deeper learning for all students. We’re able to do this without the distractions and scale-up pressure often associated with a network bureaucracy.

“We work hard but at the end our scholars reap the benefits. I can’t imagine teaching anywhere else.”

~Shameeka Tirado (4th grade Special Education Teacher-10 years at BCSC)
