[ April 17 , 2012 Middleborough, Ma) The town of Middleborough, MA is partnering with the Great American Rain Barrel Company in Hyde Park, MA to offer recycled rain barrels to residents as part of a community wide conservation and sustainability program.

“We are bringing Rain Barrels to Middleborough to help homeowners bring down their water costs and help our community protect the aquifers,” says Andrew Bagas, Middleborough DPW. “Rain barrels are an effective way to eliminate waste from our water supplies and help homeowners supplement their own usage. We hope to see one at every downspout in Middleborough”

Water shortage and rising water and sewer costs continue to be a growing global concern. Once residents start moving outdoors during the warm weather months water usage can spike as much as 60% from watering plants, lawns, filling pools, and washing cars. Rain barrels can offset that usage; saving homeowner’s money and energy and helping the community manage water supplies. Rain barrels also reduce runoff and pollution of the fragile aquatic ecosystem.

Suzanne Gebelein, Owner of the Great American Rain Barrel Company comments, “We have been selling barrels nationwide for 20 years and we are seeing a very positive trend. Communities like Middleborough are bringing large scale programs to their towns, encouraging more residents to conserve water and also helping their town mitigate pollution in the water supplies on a larger scale.”

Households see a benefit too. Barrels are easily connected to the downspouts and can significantly offset watering needs. An average roof of 2400 square feet could see more than 20,000 gallons of fresh rainwater splashing over its surface during the summer period. That is a significant source of water that homeowners could be tapping into for free

Rain barrels are being offered in three colors; Forest Green, Earth Brown or Nantucket Gray at the low cost of $69. That is 40% off the retail price of $119. Orders can be placed on line or by phone and will be delivered to the: Middleborough DPW at 48 Wareham Street, for distribution on Wednesday June 6th, 3:30-5;30pm.
