Musical Instrument Usage Policy
(Includes use of Pianos, Guitars, Practice Organ, and Percussion Instruments)
Loyola Department of Fine and Performing Arts
The Department of Fine and Performing Arts (DFPA) maintains an inventory of musical instruments that can be loaned to students on a first come, first served basis, but highest priority is given to Ensemble students using instruments during a class period, then to students using instruments for a DFPA organized lesson, class, or rehearsal. Additionally, the DFPA owns a large fleet of pianos, a set of premium acoustic guitars, and a broad collection of percussion instruments for use by students. (See also Practice Room Usage policy)
Students interested in using a DFPA owned instrument should fill out and submit an Instrument Usage Form (http://www.luc.edu/music/resources/rental-repair/). Ideally, requests should be made upon registration for courses requiring the use of the instrument, but requests can be filed at any time if needs change. At the discretion of the DFPA, some instrument may need to be shared or have restrictions upon usage preventing them from being removed from the building.
Regularly scheduled instrument sign out days will be held at the beginning of each academic semester. Individual appointments can also be made to sign out instruments by contacting the Mundelein Information Desk. Instruments must be returned by the end of the first full week of exams for both Fall and Spring semesters. Failure to check instruments back in may result in additional charges up to full replacement cost of instruments.
Instrument Costs and Availability
Fall semester through exam week - $30.00
Winter break - $30.00 (not available for instruments that stay in the building)
Spring Semester through exam week - $30.00
Graduations extension - Free (by instructor request only)
Summer - $30.00 (by instructor request only)
Special Considerations for Piano Usage
Access to the fleet of standard pianos (excluding the Yamaha Disklavier and C7 pianos) is available to all declared Music Majors and Minors free of charge. Access by non-Music students can be arranged for a fee – see Practice Room Usage policy. Usage of the premium piano collection requires permission of a piano instructor and is also free of charge.
Special Considerations for Practice Organ Usage
The DFPA maintains one practice organ for students with knowledge of organ playing. Usage of the organ requires permission of an organ instructor and is free of charge. Due to the limited availability of the organ practice room, this space can be reserved through an organ instructor.
Special Considerations for Percussion Usage
Access to the entire percussion collection is available to registered percussion students only, under the same fee structure and availability restrictions as above. Percussion instruments are a shared resource and may not be removed from the building. Priority of the percussion studio and instruments usage is determined on a case by case basis.
Damage to Instruments
All damage or missing parts should be reported upon check in of instruments. Damage beyond ordinary wear and tear may result in additional charges. Instruments lost or needing repair during usage period should be reported to the DFPA Operations manager immediately. No repair of DFPA instruments should be performed or contracted by student users.
