Food Frenzy Presentation Script

Notes on presentation: If you are doing a prize drawing, you can tickets to hand out at the beginning of the presentation. This “voice” of this presentation is light and fun, that is why I have a silly question about watermelon and give away prizes. You can also print and cut the “True/False” cards and use those for the game as well. If you don’t want to hand these out, you can simple ask people to raise their hand for true or false.

Scripting:

Did everyone get a drawing ticket? Since we are talking about the fun of Food Frenzy, I couldn’t help but include prizes! I will draw a winner after this short presentation on Food Frenzy.

Slide 1: Let’s End Summertime Hunger

Script: Thank you for letting me join you today to share about Food Lifeline, Food Frenzy and the important work you are doing by participating. Maybe you didn’t know your company is participating in Food Frenzy, so surprise!

Slide 2: 1 in 5 children live in a family struggling with hunger.

Script: Right here in our communities, one in five children are living in a family that struggles with hunger. Summer is especially hard when school meals are unavailable and these families must figure out where they can access food for their children. The good news is Food Lifeline is doing something about it. With your help, we are making sure kids don’t need to spend the summer worrying about their next meal.

Slide 3: What is Food Frenzy?

Script: Food Frenzy points-based creative competition between local businesses to raise funds, volunteer and collect food with Food Lifeline. Last year over 2.1 million meals were provided by 94 participating companies and this year the goal is to reach 3 million meals. This competition benefits Food Lifeline.

Food Lifeline is all about ending hunger in Western Washington. They work with farmers, grocery stores, restaurants and others in the food industry to rescue food that would otherwise go to waste. Through their programs they provide 88,000 meals a day to local food banks, meal programs and shelters.

Slide 4: You might be curious what Food Frenzy looks like at other companies. Sometimes it means dunk tanks, bake sales, chili cook-offs, online donation pages, mini golf, sumo wrestling competitions, and so much more. Each company figures out what works for their office and have fun helping stop hunger.

Slide 5: It also looks like groups of employees with their friends and family giving their weekdays, evenings or weekends to repack food in Food Lifeline’s warehouse and bonding in their hairnets (and beard nets).

NOTE: This would be a good place to share if you have some times set aside for your group and how they can sign up to volunteer.

Slide 6: By participating in Food Frenzy, you are making meals possible for kids. Food Lifeline has been around for 36 years and you can feel confident knowing that with every $1 donation, Food Lifeline can provide 5 meals.

Slide 7: Okay, we are going to test your hunger knowledge! You each should have a TRUE/FALSE card. Go ahead and hold those up. We will start with an easy one.

Slide 8: True or False: Watermelon is delicious.

Slide 9: True: Obviously this is a completely objective question (wink!) but imagine if you couldn’t afford fresh fruits and veggies to feed your family? This is a struggle for many families in Western Washington.

Slide 10: True or False: Most people who are hungry and visiting food banks are homeless.

Slide 11: False. Actually only 9% of the people Food Lifeline serves are homeless. Most clients report that the reason they are visiting a food bank is because their household income is inadequate to cover their basic household expenses. What might be most surprising is that 1 in 3 people visiting a food bank are children. That is 33 percent.

Slide 12: True or False: Being hungry doesn’t affect kids’ ability to learn and grow.

Slide 13: False: Malnutrition in children causes many problems and spending a summer without adequate meals means heading back to school behind other students.

Slide 14: Only 10% of kids on a free and reduce lunch program receive a similar meal in the summer.

Slide 15: True. Of the 350,000 students in Washington State who get free or reduced fare lunch during the school year, only about 11% have any access to meals during the summer. Food Lifeline is changing that through its program, Kid’s Café, providing meals and snacks at many high need communities across Western Washington. This summer they are launching 18 new sites.

Slide 16: I can do something to make sure kids have enough food in the summer.

Slide 17: True. Yes! You are participating in Food Frenzy! You can donate dollars, volunteer your time and give food.

Note: this is a great place to talk about what your company has planned for this year.

Slide 18: You will also have your own online donation page to donate and track your progress…and see how you are shaping up against other firms.

Note: Share what your financial goal is and how your employees can share this with their community through social media.

Slide 19: Thank you in advance for being a part of the solution! If you are still awake out there, let’s do our drawing ticket. I have the coolest Food Frenzy tumbler to give away!
