Bird Exercises

Flying WILD City Partners:

Get your workshop participants moving this spring with “Bird Exercises” and “Avian Antics”

As part of the presentation to connect Flying WILD to local bird species, Mary Anne Weber, Houston Audubon -Flying WILD City Partner in Houston Texas led us in “Bird Exercises” based on the Flying WILD activity Avian Antics.

We got up--out of our seats and followed her commands to mimic our favorite birds, while moving faster and faster with repeated squats, hops, dances, flutters, and more. It was great fun to move the body in a playful way while still indoors. You and your facilitators can create your own bird exercises as a new twist on the afternoon stretch to give workshop participants a break from sitting and to compliment the Avian Antics activity. Thanks Mary Anne.

Spring is also a great time to include the Avain Antics activity (see page 251 in educator guide) in your next Flying WILD workshop agenda. Each spring, birds take part in courtship displays to attract mates. The behaviors function like language to communicate emotions or intentions. Educators will really appreciate being introduced to this student led activity that is so perfect to hold the attention of young students with spring fever!

***Encourage your facilitators to add “Avian Antics” and “Bird Exercises” to their spring Flying WILD workshops.

Happy Spring!
