v Crowder College to expand campus in Webb City – May 4, 2013

By Ryan Richardson, Globe Staff Writer

Crowder College officials announced plans for a new $6 million building to be built at its Webb City campus. Crowder will build a 22,000-square-foot building that will include a 9,000-square-foot tornado safe room on the first floor. Besides being open to the public during dangerous weather, the safe room will double as classroom space.

Brown said Crowder will pay for the expansion with a $1.15 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, along with a nearly $385,000 grant the college will provide. That money will be used specifically for the safe room.

v Metropolitan College of New York – Newly Approved Undergraduate Program

Metropolitan College of New York is pleased to announce that our new program in Emergency Management and Business Continuity leading to the degrees of Associate of Arts (AA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA), which was submitted to the New York State Department of Education on February 20, 2013, was approved on April 26, 2013. Record time!

This new curriculum is designed to reflect the 10 core competencies of the FEMA Higher Education Program and the comprehensive disciplines of NFPA 1600. It has also greatly benefitted from the recommendations of our Advisory Board under the chairmanship of Kay Goss.

The degrees are intended to prepare students for various positions in the field of Emergency Management or Business Continuity, and to meet the professional development needs of individuals who would like to continue or pursue a career within law enforcement, emergency management, corporate security, transportation security, fire service, public safety, public health preparedness, and the military.

This broad-based approach, coupled with the Constructive Action, on-site certification courses, internships, and city-wide participation in large-scale Emergency Management exercises, assures no peer program in the field.

v North Dakota State University – May 10, 2013

Emergency Management Colleagues and Friends:

Today at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Awards Luncheon two dynamic early career faculty members in the Department of Emergency Management received college level awards for their outstanding work. Each year the college gives an award for the top faculty member in the categories of teaching, research, creative activity, and service. The college’s top research award went to Jessica Jensen, Ph.D. who is a second year assistant professor. Her research activities and accomplishments are extensive and significant and include numerous book chapters, refereed journal articles, and much more. For more details, Dr. Jensen’s CV is available on our department website. The college’s top service award went to Carol Cwiak, Ph.D. who is in her fourth year as an assistant professor. Her service activities and engagements are also extensive and span university level work, community, state, and national. Dr. Cwiak’s CV is also on our department website.

The accomplishments of these two faculty members are very gratifying from a number of perspectives. Professors Cwiak and Jensen both received their doctoral degrees at NDSU and were hired into tenure track positions as part of national/international position searches. Both have national visibility due to their service, teaching and research contributions. The recognition of the work of these two NDSU doctoral graduates by their colleagues across the college underscores the hard work that has been done to build the NDSU doctoral program and the quality of the individuals who have been attracted to it.

Please share your congratulations with these productive NDSU faculty members.
