Emory Writing Program Top-Off Fellowship

For the Academic Year 2017-2018

With joint funding from the Laney Graduate School and the Dean’s Office of Emory College, the

Emory Writing Program will award six graduate top-off fellowships for Academic Year 2016-2017 to students currently in a doctoral program in the Laney Graduate School.

The Writing Program works in the English Department in running the general-education first-year writing program and developing upper-division writing courses. The Writing Program’s interdisciplinary projects, such as Domain of One’s Own, faculty development initiative across the college, and the Writing Center, are housed in Emory College.

Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):

· tutoring in Emory’s Writing Center;

· designing and holding writing workshops for graduate students and undergraduates;

· helping instructors to incorporate digital literacy into their curricula;

· developing materials for the Writing Across Emory website such as materials on undergraduate research writing, etc.;

· preparing (fall) and teaching (spring) a one-credit Rhetorical Grammar (ENG 223) course;

· developing resources for writing and research in specific fields of study; and

· coordinating writing support and outreach in the broader Atlanta community.

One position will be dedicated to the first-year writing program, and one will be dedicated to the Domain of One’s Own program. Fellows will have a chance to work with faculty and staff in a variety of units across the University, depending on their areas of interest and expertise. These units may include the Writing Center, ECDS, the Rose Library, and, more generally, Woodruff Library.

We seek graduate students interested in teaching and learning generally, especially in writing and communication. Other areas of interest might be in program assessment, curriculum development, ESL writing, or multiliteracies. We encourage candidates to address specific interests and abilities they might have in their application materials.

Duties in the Writing Program for this top-off fellowship require 8-9 hours a week for 30 weeks. This position pays $5,000 for the year, divided up between the two semesters.

Eligibility:

To be considered for the fellowship, applicants must:

· be a full time student in a doctoral program, in good standing;

· be in residency the year of appointment; and

· be willing to work as a full member of a diverse team.

Application Procedure

A complete application will include:

1. A Graduate School Fellowships Application cover sheet (available to download under resources here http://www.gs.emory.edu/financial_support/advanced.html)

2. A cover letter/statement of purpose addressing the following three subjects: 1) your long-term career goals; 2) your experiences relevant to this position such as course work, experience in research methods, etc.; 3) why you would like to work with us in the Writing Program, what you could contribute to the work and goals of the program, and how this experience would enhance your professional development;

3. A current curriculum vitae;

4. A copy of your Emory transcript (a copy of an unofficial transcript issued to the student is acceptable); Combine with your CV and upload as one document

5. A writing sample (preferably under 20 pages) that represents your best expository prose;

7. A faculty letter of recommendation assessing your abilities and promise as a writer, thinker, teacher, and scholar. This letter should be uploaded in the ADMIT system and a copy addressed to Lex Hackney, Program Coordinator, Emory Writing Program, .

ADMIT Submission

All applications, including supporting materials, must be submitted using ADMIT no later than February 27, 2017. You will need to upload the application items as pdf files.

Selection

Fellows will be selected by a committee of faculty and senior administrative staff in the Emory Writing Program on the basis of fit for the theme and scope of the position and the program, breadth and depth of experience, and interest relevant to the position.
