Ecology Unit Project: Travel Brochure

Project Description:

You work for a travel agency. Your job is to attract visitors to the biome of your choice by creating an eye-catching travel brochure. Have fun, be creative, and sell your biome!

You will be assigned 1 of the following biomes:

·  Tundra

·  Boreal Forest

·  Temperate Rain Forest

·  Temperate Deciduous Forest

·  Tropical Rainforest

·  Chaparral

·  Temperate Grassland

·  Savanna

·  Desert

In creating your travel brochure, be sure to include the following aspects of your biome: locations, abiotic factors (including soil type, average annual temperature, and total annual precipitation), and biotic factors (including plants and animals). As we have learned in class, the plants and animals living in a particular biome have adaptations to that biome. Be sure to justify how each plant and animal living in your biome is adapted to that biome.

·  Include at least 3 animals:

o  Name

o  Picture

List and provide an explanation of adaptations that allow them to live there

·  Include at least 3 plants:

o  Name

o  Picture

List and provide an explanation of adaptations that allow them to live there

Additionally, you must describe at least 1 environmental problem and/or statistics on endangered species in your biome. Finally, you must include a websites used section in which you list the websites that you used to gather information about your biome. (Remember: You can use the info you find on websites but you cannot copy this info verbatim. You must put it in your own words!)

Remember, you are making a travel brochure so be creative! Tell potential travelers about the temperatures and precipitation so they know how to pack appropriately. Get them excited to visit by explaining the types of plants and animals that they can expect to see.

We will have an informal travel fair in class. You will need to give a short presentation in which you describe the characteristics of your biome and the organisms living in it.

Role / A travel agent (You are attempting to get travelers to visit your biome!)
Audience / Potential travelers
Format / You will create a travel brochure to attract people to visit your biome. The brochure will be on the front and back of a sheet of 8 ½ X 11 inch paper or larger. (NOTE: Must be able to fold into a brochure format.)
Topic / Your purpose is to describe the characteristics of your biome to inform potential travelers of what to expect when they visit your biome. You want to get them excited to travel to your biome!
(Practical/Informative)

This non-traditional assessment is worth 80 points. A grading sheet is given on the next page.

Grading:

1.  Front Cover (include the name of your biome, your name, & a picture of that represents your biome)- 10 points

2.  Locations- 5 points

3.  Abiotic Factors- 9 points

4.  Biotic Factors- 30 points

5.  Environmental problems/Statistics on endangered species- 6 points

6.  List of Websites Used- 10 points

7.  Creativity and layout- 10 points
