FALL 2011

Course Information Credit Hours: 8 units

Prerequisite: Chemistry 51 or 65

RECOMMEDED PREREQUISITE: BIOLOGY 003

Course Description:

An 8 unit general course in human anatomy and physiology in which chemical, microscopic, and macroscopic structures are related to functional significance. Topics include all the human body systems (integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive). There are approximately 6 lecture hours and 6 laboratory hours per week. Chemistry 51 or 65 is a prerequisite for this course.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the student will have:

1.  an understanding of the structure and function of all human body systems utilizing the scientific method

2.  acquired a body of information useful in everyday life

3.  the ability to integrate anatomy and physiology with other scientific areas (chemistry, nutrition, physics, psychology, etc.)

4.  acquired an essential body of background knowledge needed for health occupations

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of Biology 20 the student will be able to:

1.  use correct microscope technique to clearly focus on cells and tissues and be able to identify them and their functions

2.  locate on human models and identify the function of organs and parts of organs of all human body systems

3.  follow proper dissecting procedures to expose organs and organ parts of preserved cat and sheep, identify them and their function

4.  use correct laboratory technique to test on themselves and interpret the results of human body functions such as: reflexes, sensory perception, heart rate and sounds, blood pressure, pulmonary function, urinalysis, etc.
