Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! We hope that you and your child had a great summer and a great beginning to this school year. We are planning to have a wonderful year and hope to maintain communication as we fulfill our individual responsibilities.

Students need to come prepared for instruction, access learning opportunities, participate in class discussions, complete class and homework assignments, all while demonstrating positive behavior.

This year, students will be served in their area of disability in Direct Services classes, or on a check-in/out basis. This has been determined by his or her Individual Education Plan (IEP). Your child will also have an Exceptional Education case manager who will be monitoring progress and communicating with you as needs arise.

Reading/Writing Class Description

· Explicit instruction in sentence, paragraph, and multi-paragraph construction

· Weekly journaling

· Interventions in basic reading skills, using sight words and bi-weekly assessments

· Comprehension skills, activating prior knowledge, and using strategies appropriately

· Fluency development, using programs that include repeated readings on instructional levels and other strategies that show progress

Math Class Description

· Basic skill development with drill and practice

· Concept development with drill and practice

· Problem solving with bi-weekly assessments

· Spiral practice

· Test taking strategies
