PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 Work of this section includes: Paint all new surfaces, scheduled and as herein specified.

.1 Paint exposed surfaces whether or not colors are designated in the schedules, except where a surface or material is specifically indicated not to be painted or is to remain natural. Where an item or surface is not specifically mentioned, paint the same as similar adjacent materials or surfaces. If color or finish is not designated, the Architect will select from standard colors or finishes available.

.2 Painting is not required on prefinished items, finished metal surfaces, concealed surfaces, operating parts, and labels.

.3 All exposed miscellaneous metals, conduit, ductwork and piping (not chrome plated), to be painted unless noted otherwise.

1.2 Submittals: For all paints used, submit manufacturer's product data, including full identifying product names, numbers and catalog data sheets.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 Standard Products: Due to successful performance, durability and maintainability, the Plant Maintenance Department of the Rochester City School District stocks and uses exclusively the following proprietary paint products. These specific products and manufacturers have furthermore become the standard painting products for all District construction and renovation projects.

2.2 Substitutions: In regards to the “OR EQUAL CLAUSE” of the General Conditions of this contract, substitutions of equal or better quality may be made if approved by the District’s Design Group. If the Contractor intends to use a substitution on this project, the substitution must be submitted to the District’s Design Group for approval prior to the award of the Contract. Such submittal must include all the information required below, certified by the manufacturer to be accurate, indicating that the proposed substitute is equal to or better than the specified product. Thereafter, if no substitutions are presented with the bid prior to award of the Contract, the District must assume that the Contractor has intended in his bid to use these specified products. Furthermore, for these specific products no substitutions will be allowed after the Contract has been awarded.

2.3 Substitution Information: If a substitute paint product is submitted, the following information must be included with the product data;

.1 Vehicle Type,

.2 Volume Solids (% of volume, solids by weight not acceptable),

.3 Pigment Volume Concentration (Structural integrity of film as a % of combined pigments and binders),

.4 Titanium Dioxide in Pounds per Gallon,

.5 Viscosity in Krebs Units,

.6 Weight per Gallon,

.7 Pounds of Volatile Organic Compounds (V.O.C.) per Gallon, and

.8 Any other standard product data typically submitted for approval.

.9 Dry film thickness in mils per coat.

2.4 Manufacturers: Acceptable manufacturer's of paint products shall be one of the following;

.1 Muralo Company

.2 Bruning Paint Company

.3 DuPont Industrial (for epoxy)

2.5 Paint Types: For each type of finish, purchase only material from one manufacturer. Succeeding coats shall be of the same manufacturer as the first coat. All cans on site must be labeled. Materials include but are not limited to the following:

.1 Exterior Concrete Masonry Units

1 coat Devoe 52903 Heavy Duty Interior/Exterior Block Filler

2 coats Muralo “The Ultimate” Midgloss 100% Acrylic House Paint #1250 Series

.2 Exterior Galvanized Metal and Ferrous Metals

1 coat DuPont CORLAR 2.1-ST (25P) Satin High Solids Epoxy Mastic, 6-8 mils DFT.

1 coat DuPont IMRON 2.8 HG (333) High Gloss Polyurethane Enamel, 2 mils DFT.

.3 Exterior Woodwork

1 coat Muralo “Ultimate” linseed oil based alkyd primer #2200

2 coats Muralo “Ultimate” Midgloss 100% Acrylic House Paint #1250 Series

.4 Interior Woodwork, Gypsum Board, Plaster and CMU (Hallways)

1 coat Muralo Ultra Latex Enamel Undercoat #563

2 coats Muralo Ultra Waterbourne “Tile Like” Semigloss #7592 (tile like stain resistance – over 2,000 scrubs with no degradation)

.5 New/Existing Interior Walls/Ceiling, Woodwork for painted finish. (Except hi-durability type surfaces noted in next item). (Surfaces include all related conduits/piping/covers/painted trim/casings/etc.)

1 coat Muralo Ultra Latex Enamel Undercoat #563. Prep as

necessary. (Concrete block to have DeVoe 42903 block filler

if never painted before).

2 coats Muralo Superfinish Eggshell Enamel #400 Series (Low

VOC) Semi-Gloss at wood trim) Ed. Spec. TTP.002119 Class 2.

.6 Interior Woodwork (Semi Transparent Finish)

1 coat Old Masters oil based wiping stain

3 coats Devoe Woodpride Waterbourne Cleared Gloss Poloyurethane #DV18080000-1

.7 Interior Concrete Floors

2 coats Muralo Quik-Tred Satin Gloss Waterbourne floor paint (new concrete must cure for 30 days, remove efflorescence)

.8 Interior Ferrous Metal

1 coat Brunning Silathane Rust Inhibiting Primer #52014

2 coats Brunning Silethane (urethane) Semi Gloss Enamel #52100 Series

.9 Exterior Brick and Masonry Anti-Graffiti Coating

Apply sacrificial wax emulsion protective anti-graffiti coating 10 feet high around perimeter of building. 2 coats Genesis Graffiti Melt barrier coating (one step, non yellowing, biodegradable coating. Apply at 350 SF per gallon each coat.

2.6 Colors: Refer to specific notes on drawings. Where no color is so noted, color will be selected from manufacturer's standards by the Architect.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 Preparation of Surfaces to be Painted or Varnished

.1 Metal Work; Remove all oil and grease with non-flammable solvent. Remove all rust with steel wool.

.2 New Areas, Patched Areas, Touch Up Areas; Clean and prepare all surfaces as required to provide a smooth, even substrate for proper application of finish.

.3 Applicator must examine areas and conditions under which paint is to

be applied and notify contractor in writing if conditions detrimental to proper and timely completion of work. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 Application:

.1 Apply paint in accordance with manufacturer's directions and as

specified herein. Apply one coat of primer at all areas and two finish coats on all surfaces scheduled for painting, except as otherwise noted.

.2 Apply paint with suitable rollers or brushes. Allow adequate drying

time between coats. Sand and dust between coats. Finish coats shall be smooth, free from brush marks, streaks, laps or pile up of paint and skipped or missed areas. No spraying is allowed.

3.3 Workmanship: Observe caution to protect adjacent surfaces, floors and equipment. Cover floors and other horizontal surfaces with drop cloths where painters are working. Any and all damage to adjacent work or any part of the premise due to carelessness shall be repaired or made good at the contractor's expense.

3.4 Surplus Materials: Turn over to the District all remaining paint materials at the completion of the project.

3.5 Clean Up: Touch up and restore finish when damaged. Remove spilled or splattered paint from all surfaces. Do not mar finish of items being cleaned. Remove all rubbish and accumulated materials and leave premises clean and orderly.
