Culturally Competent Care Program

He thanked all contributors and staff for the development and production of the Cultural Competency Challenge CD-ROM. Dr. Jimenez encouraged all to visit the Diversity booth in Academy Row. M. Geoghegan distributed the volunteer schedule for Academy Row duty.

® Action item: Staff will monitor distribution of the CD programs and compile user data as it is available (from those answering online surveys and applying for CME).

Diversity Symposium

Dr. Jimenez reminded everyone of the Cultural Communications Symposium scheduled for Wednesday, February 23 at 6:30pm and encouraged all to help generate attendance.

M. Geoghegan stated that editors of Orthopaedic Knowledge Online (OKO) have requested the symposium presentations be made available and accessible to OKO users. She stated that staff is already working to repurpose the symposium for Orthopaedic Knowledge Online (OKO).

Dr. Jimenez expressed interest in presenting symposium excerpts to the Board of Councilors at their spring meeting and will work with Dr. Frank Kelly to accomplish that.

Dr. Jimenez suggested that a formal registration process for future symposia may actually help attendance by gaining commitment from people—even if the cost is free or a nominal $10 fee. Dr. Jimenez also suggested giveaways or a lottery drawing might enhance attendance.

Dr. Lewis recommended that the Committee keep up it’s momentum and continue to develop symposia or Instructional Course Lectures to shed light on diversity-related issues.

® Action item: Drs. McLaurin, Frick, Templeton, Etienne, Riew, and Lewis volunteered to develop and present the 2006 symposium. Dr. Frick will develop a presentation on diversity issues relative to resident recruitment.

® Action item: Staff will post the 2005 symposium on Orthopaedic Knowledge Online (OKO) website.

® Action item: Dr. Jimenez will work with Dr. Frank Kelly to present the 2005 symposium to the Board of Councilors.

® Action item: Staff will investigate the procedure for submitting a diversity-related Instructional Course Lecture (ICL) for presentation in 2006.

® Action item: Staff will investigate the possibility of giveaways or a lottery drawing at future symposia.

Marketing – Diversity Initiatives

M. Geoghegan reviewed the ‘04/’05 promotional activity executed to generate awareness for and participation in the Committee’s initiatives. An extended editorial calendar for future articles to appear in the Bulletin and trade publications has been planned for ’05 and Zimmer has agreed to promote the Cultural Competency Challenge CD via company-generated news releases.

Dr. Jimenez stated that Dr. Hirsch, in his capacity as Chair of the Communications Council, agreed to continued coverage of diversity-related issues in the Bulletin.

® Action item: Staff will continue to execute targeted promotions and publicity surrounding diversity initiatives.

® Action item: Committee members will submit suggestions for article topics to M. Geoghegan.

Exhibit Schedule

Dr. Jimenez announced that the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) Conference will be held in St. Louis from Thursday, March 24 through Sunday, March 27. In an effort to raise interest in orthopaedics among medical students, the Committee will exhibit at the event and host a networking event (funded, in part, by a grant from Zimmer) on Friday evening.

Dr. Jimenez stated that he will make a diversity presentation at the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) in Los Angeles in late March. Dr. Jimenez has received a verbal agreement from Smith & Nephew to fund a small networking event for $5,000. Dr. Jimenez also expressed interest in presenting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) in Denver in late September.

It was noted that the NHMA and SACNAS conferences/events are not currently budgeted for in the 2005 Committee budget. Therefore, Committee attendance and participation will require outside sources of funding.

® Action item: Drs. Templeton, Jimenez, Riew, and Lindsey volunteered to attend the SNMA event on March 25 and help staff the booth on March 26. UPDATE: Drs. Templeton and Riew are no longer able to attend. Additional volunteers should contact Tricia Arnold at or 847-384-4153.

® Action item: Staff will coordinate the SNMA booth set-up and the networking event, as well as related promotional tactics. Staff will keep volunteers informed about program details and travel arrangements. Staff will help coordinate the NHMA event, provided it is funded by Smith & Nephew.

® Action item: Dr. Jimenez will contact Dr. D’Ambrosia in an effort to participate in the program at SACNAS in Denver.

Diversity Award 2006

The video honoring Dr. Tosi for the 2005 Diversity Award was played for the Committee.

The Committee reviewed the suggested timeline for the 2006 award.

Dr. Templeton suggested that future Diversity Award ceremonies are not scheduled in conflict with other activities, so that more people will be able to attend.

The Committee discussed potential revisions to the Nomination Form and related Scoring Sheet. It was agreed that being an active role model, leading by example, and embodying diversity issues are extremely important in future consideration of a nominee. The Committee agreed that these factors can be assessed via submitted letters of recommendation. It was further agreed that point values should be added to the Scoring Sheet for “demonstrated mentoring” activities.

The Committee determined that a Nomination Form and related materials will only be valid for two years and, therefore, able to be resubmitted as is for one year after its original submission. This will help keep the background information current and accurate on nominees, allowing them the best chance for consideration.

® Action item: Staff will revise the Nomination Form and Scoring Sheet to reflect the agreed upon items above and submit to the Committee for final approval.

® Action item: Staff will execute a promotional plan to generate nominations for the 2006 Diversity Award, beginning with an insert of the Nomination Form in a spring mailing of AAOS Report/Orthopaedic Resource Update.

Research – Residents

M. Geoghegan stated that the biannual Resident Survey and corresponding survey of the Residency Program Directors will take place in the Fall of 2005.

L. Jenkins stated that the Academy’s Orthopaedic Census completed in 2004 shows an increase in women and minorities among Candidate Member Practitioners (CMPs).

Dr. Jimenez asked Drs. Haynes and Templeton to rekindle their efforts to write an article documenting medical student and orthopaedic resident gender and ethnicity trends.

® Action item: To maintain good relations with the committee overseeing the OITE so the Diversity Committee can continue its research project among residents, Dr. Jimenez will write a letter to Dr. Tornetta thanking his committee for the opportunity to perform this research at the time of the OITE.

® Action item: Staff will execute, and subsequently analyze, the 2005 resident gender and ethnicity survey.

® Action item: Drs. Haynes and Templeton will write an article about medical student and orthopaedic resident demographic trends and attempt to publish it in Academic Medicine and the Bulletin. Staff will request approval from appropriate Academy departments to publish the information generated from Academy research.

Grassroots/Mentoring Program

M. Geoghegan stated that the Follow Your Path video is now available on DVD. Dr. Templeton recommended that packets (including the DVD and supporting collateral materials) be sent to Deans of Medical Students for their “Career Nights.”

The mentoring program was discussed and the current participation figures were presented: The program includes 265 mentors and 225 students across nearly all 50 states. A brief report on the grassroots recruitment efforts of nine orthopaedists was also presented.

Website

M. Geoghegan stated that a sample of the Cultural Competency Challenge is currently online at the Diversity in Orthopaedics website www.aaos.org/diversity. Additional improvements to the site have recently been realized, including an update of the calendar and the addition of information aimed at Residency Program Directors.

L. Jenkins stated that the Diversity in Orthopaedics button on the AAOS homepage is consistently one of the top-ranked links.
