LESSON PLAN 2: FRANKENSTEIN

GRADE 12 ENGLISH

DAY 2 &3 &4 : PREFACE AND LETTERS 1-4

CONTENT LITERACY
STRATEGIES / My lesson will be addressing the following content literacy strategies:
·  Word Map for the Word of the Day
·  Dual Entry Diary for documenting students’ comprehension
·  RATATA
·  Annotating the Text
·  Graphic Organizer (for Walton’s character)
·  Decision Tree
·  Journal Entry Handout
·  Literary Circles
·  Powerpoint Presentations (2)
OBJECTIVES / ·  The students will demonstrate their reading and speaking skills by participate in a Read-Aloud/Think-Aloud/Talk-Aloud for the opening pages of the novel. (
·  The students will demonstrate comprehension by completing a Dual Entry Diary for the reading
·  The students will watch a Powerpoint Presentation about Literary Circles and be assigned one of the following roles: Discussion Director, Summerizer, Illuminator, Connector, Word Watcher, or Illustrator
·  The students will create a character analysis by completing a Graphic Organizer
·  The students will demonstrate their comprehension of the readings by completing a series of questions to be taken up through a PowerPoint Presentation and class discussion (see attachment)
MATERIALS / I will need the following materials for my lesson:
·  Access to a computer
·  Copies of student handouts (as per attachments)
·  Pencils for each student
·  Dictionary
·  Highlighters
SET-UP / My lesson plan requires
·  The computer is to be linked to either a SMARTBOARD or PROJECTION SCREEN for the PowerPoint Presentation.
·  Students to be placed in groups in order to participate in Literary Circles
METHODOLOGY / Day 1 of the lesson will proceed as follows:
1.  We will do Word Work and one of the students will bring up their Word Map and debrief the class on the definition of one of the assigned words. All students will be required to use that word in a sentence at one point during the class. (5 minutes)
2.  We will review some of the things we learned about Mary Shelley and complete a RATATA for the Preface and Letter 1. (20 minutes)
3.  Students will complete a Dual Entry Diary where they choose any three quotes from the reading and comment on them. (5 minutes)
4.  Silent reading for the remainder of the class: Letters 2-4)
Day 2 of Lesson 2
1.  The day begins with Word Work (5 minutes)
2.  PowerPoint Presentation for Literary Circles with various students reading the slides.
3.  Modeling of Literary Circles Strategies with 1 group of students while others are to write and provide commentary. (30 minutes)
4.  Students will complete a DECISION TREE handout on which they will document “the good and the bad” about working with Literary Circles. They are also to provide alternatives, which will serve as guidelines for their own behavior in Literary Circles. (5 minutes)
Day 3 of Lesson 2
1.  Word-work with Word Maps. (5 minutes)
2.  Literary Circles for Preface and Letters 1-4
( 20 minutes)
3.  Class Review for Readings through
PowerPoint Presentation (see attachment) 15 minutes)
ASSIGNMENT / ·  Students are to complete their Word Map for each day.
·  They are to finish the assigned readings for the week if they haven’t done so, and prepare for their role in the Literary Circle.
·  Students will complete a Graphic Organizer for Walton’s character.
·  They will complete their Journal Entry for the Week.
ASSESSMENT / Students’ will be given a purpose for reading (describing Walton’s character) and their ability to complete this assignment will demonstrate comprehension skills.
STRUGGLING READERS’
MODIFICATIONS / As the class will be placed in groups for the Literary Circle, this will give the teacher opportunity to work with “struggling readers” while the more successful students can complete the assignments on their own.
