Objective: TSW obtain proper knowledge of subject-verb agreement in order to effective communicate in standard English. (DoK 2, 4.a.4)

Do Now (5 minutes):

Draw a line between the subject and the predicate.

1)Judy runs.

2)Judy and her dog run on the beach every morning.

Fill in the blank with the correct verbs.

1) Mr. Jones (live/lives) down the street from Holly Springs High School.

2) (Do/Does) this song sound good to you?

3) A lot of this catfish (smell/smells) funny

Set (5 minutes): “How many of you all play football? What are the rules? What do rules do? [prevent disagreement] What happens when there are no rules? [chaos] Subjects and verbs have rules too. If not out sentences don’t really make sense. Before we get into it, let’s review what we already know.

-What is a noun? [a person, place, or thing]

-What is a verb? [an action/movement]

-What is the subject of a sentence? [the person or thing doing the action]

-What is the difference between a subject and a noun? [a sentence can have multiple nouns but not all of them will be the subject, i.e: the girl played with the ball.]

Procedure:

  1. TSW/TTW work through guided notes. (10 minutes)
  2. TSW correct the short paragraph on their worksheet. (5 minutes)

  1. Class will review short paragraph (5 minutes)

Restate: Today we learned about sentence organization, matching subject with verbs in sentences.

State: Tomorrow with Mr. Johnson we will learn about more sentence organization when we learn about compound-complex sentences.

**********The subject and verb must agree in number:

  1. A singular noun always uses the ______form of a verb.
  2. A plural noun always uses the ______form of a verb.

Example: The boy learns about science. (singular)

The boys learn about science. (plural)

In the present tense singular verbs often end in “-s” or “-es.”

You try: The cat (sleep/sleeps) in a basket. (singular)

**********Irregular verbs

The verbs be, do and have are all irregular. They can be main verbs or helping verbs. Regardless, they have to match the subject or the subject pronoun.

Example:

To be:I am a ranger. (main verb)

I am tagging a bear.(helping verb, tagging)

To do:She does well (main verb or helping verb)

She does climb cliffs. (main verb or helping verb)

To have:He has two dogs. (main verb or helping verb)

He has played with dogs. (main verb or helping verb)
